Update old furniture

Hi I feel bad writing this.

My great uncle passed before Christmas. The house had been left to me and my siblings.

I really like the sideboard and dresser - I can't remember the name?? Pics attached. Excuse the mess we have been emptying his home.

My siblings homes are brand new and they have said I can have them.

How could I make them look more modern. He's had them 50 odd years maybe more.

My current furniture (tv stand and coffee table ) is the Hartford range at next. Grey with a dark wood top.
I've included photos. These aren't my home just pics from google.

Could I varnish the tops and the sideboard / dresser to match?

The sideboard is good as is! - have a look at Ebay for Scandi/Danish sideboards - it would be a shame to paint it and you could make some money selling it and buying something that suits you.

I'm not sure on the make. It's still at my uncles.

Sorry I don't want to actually paint it just varnish but would that still ruin it?

The big trend at the moment in upcycling is to paint parts of the furniture eg keep drawers in wood but paint the edges around drawers in black/navy. It looks really nice but I would agree with Howls - this style of furniture is incredibly popular atm and instead of trying to turn it into something it just isn't in order to match your existing stuff I would sell it.

I wouldn't touch it. It looks like typical 1960s - 1970s teak furniture which has been popular with people who love/collect mid century furniture.
If you wanted the pieces spruced up, I would speak to a furniture restorer.

Hi I was just coming into say I've found it on google and it is teak. I've seen some on eBay sell for £11-£16 so I'm glad it's not worth that much.

Can I put varnish onto teal? It looks a tad orange and I'm not too keen on the colour.

@HowlsMovingBungalow at I guess I think the desk is Remploy as it does look the same as the ones on eBay.

No idea about the sideboard.

Sideboard looks like G Plan to me but I'm no expert, I have a similar one.
