Hi all, we are in planning stages and looking to replace the carpets in the lounge, stairs and bedrooms. Decor is/ will be nothing special fairly light, rooms are not vast but it will be £££. So I want to get something that can stay for a while and won't date quickly. The catch I have 2 preschoolers so my go to light coloured choices are making me nervous. What bombproof colours/ finishes have you done your carpets and any tips greatly appreciated. Thanks

You can bleach many modern polypropylene carpets so choose whatever colour you'd like. Just check the specifications of whatever carpet you choose x

I'd go for mid grey. Alternatively wooden floors plus large rugs? Made.com has beautiful and very reasonably priced ones.

Mid grey or a nice green?

goldpendant · 09/01/2020 18:28

Whatever you do don't go dark. I assumed our beautiful navy carpet wouldn't show up the kids mess, but it shows up every hair, bit of fluff, lint, dust. Nightmare. I'd go neutral/greigey green in a heartbeat if I could justify ripping it up.

Definitely not dark. Our last house had navy carpet and it showed every single crumb or hair. I groaned when it started cropping up on Pinterest, houzz etc.

Try to get a neutral colour with a fleck in it. Hides the dirt.

The most mess resistant colour odd a speckled oatmeal ime. I tried a dark colour to hide the dirt, and spent years picking up white threads from it. I had noidea how much dirt is white.

We will be getting a mid grey (yes I know lots on MN think it’s boring, but 🤷🏻‍♀️)

Light is a nightmare, but so is dark - and that’s without kids! I don’t like browns/blues/greens so it doesn’t leave much 🤣

There are lots of matching carpets so you could go for a a more expensive, nicer feeling one in the areas the kids are less likely to spill stuff on and the hardier cheaper one in a play area

Definitely something with a twist/fleck in it! We have mid grey with a darker fleck and it has survived newborn to 4 year old really well.

Mid Grey heather is probably the most practical, and what we'll be going for. Life is too short to vacuum every day!

Get yourself a bottle of this and any colour will do!

Our new build has cream çarpet & this stuff is miraculous even taking off whole bottle of red nail polish split by a preschooler. Just use loads of it.
