Dining room design - help!

Hi all.
Been moved into our terraced for two years and do not know what to do with the dining room to make it look nice.
It is a large room but quite dark - the only light is from the kitchen window at the end of the extension. It has magnolia walls and a light grey carpet.
I'm considering looking into the next home design service if any has had any experience they could share?
Otherwise I'll take any ideas! I was going to upload pictures but I can't because I'm new!

Some pics would be good to help. Have you looked on Pinterest? How much are you looking at spending? Is it a dedicated dining room or does it have multiple uses? If the room is very dark anyway it can be worthwhile embracing this, have a look on Instagram for dark interior inspiration.

It's got a dining table and chairs in at the moment, a sideboard and a book shelf. The kitchen is separate (an extension) but the back door is part of the room. I'll upload pictures when the site allows.

I have looked on pinterest but they all seem to be huge houses. I am mostly interested in paint choice and what to do with the wall space/what type of furniture to include and how best to arrange it :)
