Grey carpet

I've lived abroad for years and years- somewhere hot so haven't had a carpet for 20 years. But recently got a VPN and am all over Homes under the hammer 🤣🤣
The thing I can notice most of all is the grey carpets!!! They put them in every single house. Does anyone live with grey carpets?!! They all look like office buildings.
Am I massively out of touch?!! (Yes! I know I am really, but those carpets 🤮)

Add on- I LOVE grey generally- I've painted some of my wood furniture grey and it looks lovely with a pink in my room. Just can't fathom a whole house of grey carpeting.

Sadly Homes Under the Hammer mainly features people in the buy to let market. Everything is done on the cheap so magnolia walls and grey carpet is as imaginative as it gets.

I hate them. Nothing is more off putting than a grey house except grey and black which is even worse.
There are so many lovely shades and colours out there. Grey is just drab and a bit B&Q.

dalmatianmad · 05/11/2019 13:06

I must be boring and drab. Most of my carpets are a shade of grey!

Astrabees · 05/11/2019 13:40

Grey is almost "out" now, so you are lucky to have arrived back at this time.

what's next though. I still really like grey and I need to get a new carpet for the spare room this week. It cant be dark because the room is north facing but ive no idea what to go for.

BubblesBuddy · 05/11/2019 13:57

The same colour as your landing carpet! Different colours in every room isn’t a great look. Too disjointed.

I have a silver grey wool velvet carpet in my bedroom (it is separated from the landing!) and it’s as far away from Homes Under the Hammer as it can be. It’s luxurious, looks beautiful with a dressed bed and my furnishings and I would have it again. I don’t think a quality carpet in a restful and tasteful colour ever goes “out” as long as the rest of the soft furnishings are well chosen.

This topic comes at a very handy time for me! We're just in the process of choosing new carpets for our bedrooms and upstairs landing. At the moment it's the same colour throughout - a neutral, sandy colour. I like the colour but not how easily it seems to get dirty, particularly down the sides

I was thinking a mid grey... but now I'm questioning that!

Anyone got any photos of their carpets that they love?

mynamechangemyrules · 05/11/2019 14:01

I still like a light coloured carpet, despite my mum decrying the people who'd lived in our house before us with 'they obviously didn't have children if they thought beige carpets were a good idea' as we all trailed mum through the house...
but a lighter grey, more dusky somehow, could work couldn't it? The Homes under the hammer ones are that awful industrial grey.

Just saw one where a blokes done it up for himself and it is so different- lovely copper fittings and Peranakan tiling 💕

I have seen some vile houses, ruined by decoration and carpeting all in grey. Just no.

What’s a VPN?

You’re right about the grey. Sometimes the only way you know you’re not looking at a black and white image is that you can see some greenery out the window.

GarethSouthgatesWaistcoat · 06/11/2019 13:32

Following with interest! I need to redo the stairs carpet and the rooms upstairs (small house) have a pale, creamy tile or laminate.

I was thinking something light and taupe as I wear slippers indoors. I need to repaint the stairs too so no need to match particularly.

What’s a VPN?
It's a virtual proxy network- it means I can watch U.K. tv from all the way over here!

I know grey carpets are sensible but light ones are much nicer- my flat in London has been rented for 13 years with light carpets and they're still in good nick...

I like pale, sandy coloured carpets. I have dogs, cats and am a shoes on in the house person who doesn’t hoover terribly often, and my carpets are fine.

Thanks for explaining VPN. Smile
