Best paint colour to brighten a dark room

I have a dark basement bedroom. It faces north, and looks out across a small courtyard onto a wall. It's currently painted bright white. I'd like to repaint with a warmer, brighter colour to give it a cosier feel. Looking for specific paint colours that I could try. I'd like something fairly neutral if possible but also open to stronger - but not dark - colours.

We painted our north facing living room in Dulux Light & Space 'Coastal Glow' and our north facing bedroom in 'Morning Light' from the same range, and they've definitely helped. Also, never underestimate the value of adding a whacking great mirror on the wall adjacent to the window in a north facing room! Its an oldie but a goodie, it really does make a difference.

Thanks Wildwood. Good tip to use the light reflective paint - didn't think of it. Both those colours look nice. I do have a mirror but am going to get a bigger one or put several on the one wall!

I've just painted our nursery (north facing) a lovely light taupe colour. "Je m'appelle sissy" (Hmm) by valspar if I recall correctly. It's fresh and bright but also warm I'm very happy with it.

Dulux Sundrenched Saffron 5.

Makes a north-facing room look as if it's sunny.

White in a dark room = shadowy grey. You need light for it to look white!

I'd go for a mid dark colour, I've got dark rooms painted navy and a strong green, I love it

These are lovely colour suggestions, the je m'appelle missy is gorgeous! I'm wary of going dark in a bedroom because I want it to have a fresh 'morning' feel.

Just bumping the thread in case of any other suggestions. Have looked into all of the above but would welcome any other ideas (specific names of paint would be great).

Farrow and Ball Borrowed Light is a gorgeous pale blue which we used in a north facing bedroom, lightened it up beautifully.

I think baby blue walls and yellow accessories make a very fresh warm room

I wouldn't have considered blue for a dark room but it looks good.

Blueberry white is gorgeous (we have it in our attic)...

Just painted our very dark dining room in Crown Toasted Almond and Crown Aged White. An LED floor lamp (which beams upwards) has really helped too :)
