Gloss paint alternative

Hi everyone,

So I am looking at re-decorating my hall stairs and landing and we have a lot of wood work that has previously been glossed and is now looking absolutely awful. I was wondering if anyone knew any alternatives to gloss paint that I could use to paint over the paint that is already there? It needs to be safe for babies as I have a 5 months old and an older girl as well who would really hate the smell of gloss.

Any alternative wall paint that's better than the regular dulux would be great to hear about too.

We use satinwood on our woodwork, it's more of a Matte finish than gloss, you can buy a quick dry version I think.

Our decorator swears by using trade paints, they are much harder wearing and cheaper, you can get pretty much any colour mixed in to trade paints.
