I wasn't aware there were that many choices? Switch or dimmer? Plastic, brass, silver?

Don’t go for anything shiny metal as it will be covered in fingerprints.

Brushed steel or brass can look stylish but will be out of fashion at some point in the future. Same for black or bronze.

White plastic is cheap and won’t date. If you want something smarter than white plastic but still fairly timeless you could look at white flat plate which are white sprayed metal.

You can also get black plastic, might stand out less than white if you are having dark coloured walls.

Flat plate switches and sockets require 35mm back boxes whereas plastic and some chunkier metal plates use 25mm back boxes. If you’re re using the existing back boxes you will probably find they are 25mm so that limits your options somewhat.

@minipie - "Brushed steel [...] will be out of fashion at some point in the future."

Hmm maybe, personally I think that non-shiny mid-grey metal* is going to look OK for a good while yet.

White plastic does look a bit cheap to my eye, especially if your walls aren't pure white.

Just my opinion though. A chacun ses gouts.

I must get around to replacing ours...

  • Deliberately not being too specific ("brushed steel")!

Haha - my point was just that everything goes out of fashion at some point. White plastic is never going to look expensive yes but also will always be the default so won’t date!

I’ve just put a mixture in my house - including some brushed steel Grin - but all the uber trendy decor images I see have unlacquered brass (I bet they hate it when it goes dark dull brown...) or black (not my style) so I’m already out of fashion... Grin
