It doesn’t do anything for the room. It is too dark and in the wrong place. I will have a look at Westelm for better options for you.

keepingbees · 13/09/2019 12:47

I think the size is ok but it doesn't suit your room somehow. I think on a hard floor you need something with a deeper pile.
Have you posted your room before? I feel I recognise it, possibly a photo with a dog on the sofa?

ChipmunksInAttic · 13/09/2019 12:50

nope I haven’t posted before :)

if i place to sofa against the window we will have to look right to be able to watch the tv. it could be an option if we had two sofas maybe... i’m confused really.

I don't think anything in this room is working particularly well. It all looks so sparse and cold. I think the rug needs to be much much bigger and fill the middle space between the furniture, and I think it doesn't work well because of the tassels. They draw your eyes to them which makes the rug look narrower and therefore makes the room look narrower. Have you looked at Ikea for rugs? They do lots of huge ones for reasonable prices.

Knittedfairies · 13/09/2019 12:58

I don't think it's wide enough. (I've never heard of the two-feet-on-a-rug thing, but all my rugs seem to have two feet on them.)

Floralnomad · 13/09/2019 13:00

I’d do something about the fire before I worried about which rug to get , it just looks a bit like an afterthought stuck on the wall .

ChipmunksInAttic · 13/09/2019 13:13

we have just moved in, trying to settle. let’s be more positive, i can’t change the fireplace but i hope the house will get better in time as we live in it..

Chipmunks asked about the rug not what you think of the room!

HennyPennyHorror · 13/09/2019 13:39

Ah yes...see the issue with moving the sofa. I think if you pull everything a bit closer in...it will look cosier and then the rug will also look more "right".

VeThings · 13/09/2019 13:45

It’s too small. You need a bigger and squarer rug.

Can you move tv to the side of the fireplace, so you can move the sofa to the window wall and be able to watch tv? This would make the room cosier.

rideawhiteswan · 13/09/2019 13:46

It's a nice room op just need a bit of dressing. And a bigger rug.
Have a look at sofa.com we got a nice one from there, cheapest price and free returns if you don't like it.

ChipmunksInAttic · 13/09/2019 14:00

many thanks for the comments:) I’ve decided to return the rug and look for something bigger. thanks!

I agree a bigger rug would be ideal. I’m so glad to see you are buying natural materials (jute). So much better for the environment. I would go for something in warm colors to soften your room and make it cosier. The space is also big enough for a pattern. The rug you picked is flat weave, I think one with an actual pile would be better...something kids can sit & play on comfortably.

A few care tips. (I apologize if you already know this).;Just remember that with natural fabric carpets you do not want to place furniture on it at all because this creates a dark, undisturbed spot for moths, carpet beetles, and fungus to take hold and put holes in your rug. You also want to hoover it weekly and every month roll it up and clean under it. They also should be professionally cleaned every 3yrs but you can stretch to 5 if you ban shoes in the house.

Floralnomad · 13/09/2019 14:11

I’d go for a more colourful rug with a bit more pile and I didn’t mean to be rude about the fireplace it’s just that as someone who’s lounge has been a work in progress ( extending / new fire etc) for the last 18 months I think it’s better to not bother with the finishing touches until it’s actually finished IYSWIM .

Cocolapew · 13/09/2019 14:16

IKEA do larger rugs with a thicker pile, I think one of them would look better. I think that one is just too flat iyswim?

ChipmunksInAttic · 13/09/2019 14:17

great tips, thanks a lot!

What size is the rug? Sorry if I missed it scrolling Smile

The grey/teal rug seems to suck all the life out of your room sorry! I think I'd choose a paler colour, something warmer or subtly patterned.

FWIW I'm a fan of a rug with a bit of pile. I like the texture. You can always bring more colour in with cushions, throws, wall art etc.

I agree it needs to be bigger - don't discount very large square and circular rugs even if you have to overlap the furniture at the edges. I've seen Ikea put two identical rugs together (with their rug grip underneath to prevent slippage) to create a larger area rug and you can't see the join.

If you can't immediately find something you like two large, pale Ikea rugs or equivalent - placed together - would give you instant texture in the centre of the room.
I've recently been selling off some of my great condition Ikea furnishings (replacing with slightly fancier decor!) and they've sold for a surprising amount on Facebook.
I feel less wasteful - and less guilty - for buying cheap then buying again. It afforded me a bit of time to live in my surroundings and find something I really loved to replace it. I don't tend to buy into fast fashion but I've recouped a lot of what I spent and someone else has got a bargain in the process. Could be an option while you focus on other parts of the room.

Berber style rugs are all the rage right now. La Redoute has plenty, in fact every Instagrammer and their dog has the Afaw rug Wink
I have the Fatouh rug downstairs. Their rugs always have 30/40/50% off via a code.
Jute rugs seem to be the next big trend. I saw a nice natural one on Dunelm which probably comes in larger sizes. Dunelm online is a good source of rugs too.

MikeUniformMike · 13/09/2019 16:05

It looks a bit like everything is pushed up to the wall. The room might look better with the sofa nearer the hearth.
A rug needs to be anchored.

Yiddytod · 13/09/2019 16:08

Try Rugvista

SuzieQ10 · 13/09/2019 20:13

I'd return it. It doesn't offer anything.

fedup21 · 13/09/2019 20:15

It looks like the cheapy Ikea rugs everyone had in their university bedrooms in the mid 90s-I would send it back.

flirtygirl · 15/09/2019 13:19

It's looks cheap. Homesense and Tk maxx do much nicer for better prices.

There are loads online too op.

Starrynights86 · 15/09/2019 13:30

It’s too small
