Mixing Dylon pods?

No idea if this is the right place to ask, but Google is giving me nothing.

I want to dye our sofa covers a very dark navy - I'm not convinced that Dylon's 'navy blue' will be dark enough. Would it be an option to use a pod of navy dye and a pod of black in the machine together? Or would it just end up as some horrific marbled disaster?

I've mixed them (but not those colours)
I haven't used the new pods but I find that some colours are obviously a mix of shades themselves - in the purple you will see grains of pink and grains of blue.
I actually mix the dye in warm water first outside of the machine, start and partially fill machine with water, add jug of dye then the damp clothes. I find this avoids patchiness and clumps of badly dissolved dye.
You do have to be careful you don't let the programme go too far and the door lock engage before you get the clothes in!

TBH it's unlikely that there will be enough room in your washing machine to get an even colour on the cover unless it's really very small/thin and the washer has a huge capacity. Half full is about the max for a good, even finish IME. Mixing colours is less likely to be an issue than the space is. I've done it before without issues.

Also, even if the cover itself is 100% cotton it's likely that it's been stitched with polyester or pollycotton which. If that's the case then the stitches won't take the colour, that might not bother you but it's worth taking it into consideration.

If you do dye it you'll need to work out how many packs of dye you need for the dry weight of the cover. Probably several.

@WhereDoesThisToiletGo Definitely a good tip on the pre-mixing. This may be a(nother?) stupid question but how do you get the machine partly filled with water and then add the dye/fabric in?! I have a front-opening machine...

@MmeBufo Valid point about capacity. It's a sectional sofa, so I can split the covers into reasonably small loads... Hoping that will be ok but this is feeling like more and more of a gamble!

Yes, unfortunately dye always is a bit of a gamble.

Purely in terms of colour mixing, it can/ does work depending on the colours used.

To get a dark navy I would use 2 x navy pods rather than 1 x navy + 1 x black as suspect that would just end up black.

The colours would have to be the same depth to mix, eg mixing pale pink and orange will not give you a pinky orange as I may have found out to my cost. As the Dylon website says, colour mixing rules apply.
