Modern kitchen- Are splashbacks the way to go?

Completely redoing the kitchen and myself and partner have decided to go for a modern handleless kitchen.
However, he wants tiles and I'm not sure if this would really work with the sleek lines of a very modern kitchen. Most of the photos I have seen have splashbacks which I definitely think I prefer for that style of kitchen. I feel like tiles just wouldn't work in a less traditional kitchen. Anyone have any preferences. I'm wondering maybe I just need to open my mind a bit Or do I have a point??

Not sure I get your question- do you mean a slab backsplash as opposed to a tiled one? Lots of modern kitchens have subway tiles, marble tiles etc and it looks fine.

I like upstands that match the work surface. I have tiles now and they drive me crazy.

My next kitchen will be Matt white handleless with dark wood or marble type worktops with small upstands. I may get splashback behind the hob IF I can fit one on an island.
