Can you put hot things on a walnut table?

Would things such as hot dishes and hot drinks mark it? Wondering whether I need to buy place mats and coasters, but have seen some table mats made of walnut wood, which makes me think walnut might be heatproof!

I think it may be the varnish painted on top of the wood that gets damaged by heat. I would play it safe and get coasters - it is an absolute pig of a job to repair heat marks.

Thank you.

I wouldn’t put hot things on a wooden table. Even if it doesn’t scorch the wood you’ll still have rings and marks where the heat has drawn out the oil and wax from the wood.

The varnish goes white where the heat has been.

do not put hot things from the oven or cups with hot drinks made with boiling water on any wooden table especially one that is highly polished like french polished
even an oak table will mark, walnut is vulnerable and it costs a lot to get it re polished to get water / heat marks out
if an accident happens mop up water liquid immediately ( like in seconds) and then try rubbing olive or linseed oil in immediately to any white mark
use table mats and coastersalways; if you have kids get a table protector ( dunelm then cut to table size no overhang) to put under the table cloth as even water will damage a high polish table in a few seconds

A french polisher showed me a trick once for white rings. Put a little brasso on a cloth and working in a circular direction go over the area again and again and again. It worked brilliantly on a table a friend put a hot teapot on.

Thank you very much for the tips! It sounds like walnut table mats would not be a good idea, then, for the same reasons!
