Is this a crazy idea?

Just bought a house with 3 floors and redoing it - is it bananas to want a different wallpaper for each floor in the hallway? Eg one for the entrance hallway going up the stairs but when you get round the corner on the stairs, at the corner join, it’s a new one? Same thing on the top floor?

Is it bananas?!

No I don’t like the idea. The difference between the graphic ground floor and delicate adult floor is too much and I think it would look as if you ran out of one design and decided on a totally different theme. Also is it covering the whole wall or above dado? Wallpaper below dado (child finger print area) is a disaster waiting to happen.
I had three floors in my last Victorian house and we did raspberry pink below dado ground and first and a bold Designers Guild wallpaper above and then in top floor no dado so same wallpaper on full walls. You can be quite adventurous without changing the actual pattern.

I like the first paper but bit the 2nd two, but that's by the by. If I saw this I would think that the papers were put up away different times. Like one year you redecorated one floor and bought x paper, 5 years later you did another floor and bought y paper. The join between these 3 will be gentle, but it will jar. I think for your idea to work they'd need to be 3 that repeat the pattern but can shift in tone. That will look more intentional, less like you did it in stages.

I think you are right re the William Morris style!

Anyway I think I will go for something like this throughout instead

Thank you all for your help!

Anyone know where to find this flooring or what it’s called? Can’t find the nice shiny one anywhere!

Hi op - you've gone from mad to boring! Don't do that. If you are lucky enough to have a large hallway then make it a feature. Be bold. Use bright colour or large pattern (I agree re William Morris). Don't do another farrow and ball greige colour. Electric royal blue, olive green, pink, wallpaper with florals/leaves/bold stripes.... Go for it (just not with your original papers)

minipie · 03/07/2019 08:56

I like the black white and yellow scheme and don’t think it’s boring or greige. You could pick a slightly bolder yellow colour if you want to ramp it up (try eg F&B Sudbury Yellow which is strong without being too in your face).

I suspect the shiny black and white tiles are marble. Expensive and very slippery when wet! You might be able to find glossy porcelain tiles in that style though again they will be slippery. You could get matt tiles or Amtico in that design but it won’t be shiny. If it’s a Victorian house I would stick with Victorian style tiles - plenty of reproduction ones around - try eg Martin Mosaic.

I read your post very quickly and I was excited to see you wanted banana wallpaper!

Then I re-read it properly... so disappointing.Shock

From a "people won't think we're broke" standpoint- trust me, however rich the land, big the house, antique the furniture- you can be broke. And people will think it. My dh works for some very "rich" broke people, who are clearly spending what they used to have and who need to scrimp half way through projects after overspending. That's what I'd think had happened to you. Sorry. (I really like the wallpapers though)

crispysausagerolls · 03/07/2019 10:05

But look - I don’t care if people think we are broke! 🤷🏻‍♀️

I do care if people think I have fucking appalling taste for some reason, even though taste is subjective and bound to be criticism no matter what. 🤦🏻‍♀️

Banana wallpaper would be something special... 😍

Ooh I have an idea. Banana leaf print wallpaper.

Look here

www.wallpaperwebstore.co.uk/bn-wallcoverings-on-the-spot-leaves-219350

Or more bold

www.storebond.com/products/beibehang-retro-hand-painted-rain-forest-plant-banana-leaf-garden-wall-paper-custom-photo-wallpaper-for-living-room-background

Would look beautiful in a Victorian house with either crisp white woodwork or if you're feeling brave black skirting, black Bannisters etc

And you could even change your light switches and sockets to black or brass would look good too.

BE BOLD

Knobrob · 03/07/2019 10:29

Like the photo you posted you could panel the lower half of the wall and paper above it.

If you Google 'mdf panelling' there are ready made products or a chippy can put grooves into MDF for you. Again, paint that black!

MollyHuaCha · 03/07/2019 10:54

How about banana leaves on the ground floor, bananas on the middle floor and some kind of fruit salad on the top?

RockinHippy · 03/07/2019 13:36

I agree with not going boring. Mixing papers can definitely work, I love ours. But stick to 2 prints, not 3 & take great care matching them up. We have one room with a black papered wall & the rest cream, both papers are the same print. Our hall that we are just doing now has the lower half of the bottom wall in a grey tartan & the rest of the walls in a silver grey glitter paper. Another room has 2 completely contrasting papers in tartan & animal skin on opposite walls & the prints are picked up with accessories in the room. They all work well, we love them, but it's 2 papers not 3. 3 is overkill
