Decorator damaged door. What would you do?

The door needed trimming after a wooden floor had been fitted, making the floor higher. It is a fire door, i.e. solid wood about 4.5cm thick, and therefore expensive. The decorator has trimmed it way too much, so there is now a gap of 11-12mm under the door. This is obviously going to be draughty, and will also probably make the door less fireproof. Should I ask him to buy a new one? He’s obviously not going to want to. I’m so annoyed.

Also, he has not trimmed it cleanly - as you can see, the edge is ragged.

I think you've got no choice but to tell him. I'd go in softly at first - just send over the pics, say it clearly is damaged and has been trimmed too much and would he be able to fit you in this week for the work to be put right

So not asking him to do it per se, but being clear that he IS doing it. Nicely

The thing is, I doubt there’s any way of putting it right other than buying a new door (and then painting it, and paying for the paint). Maybe I should ask whether he could add anything back onto the bottom of it?! I don’t know whether that’s possible. (He’s supposed to be coming over this week to do some more work, so I could speak to him about it then.)

Does anyone have thoughts on whether they’d actually ask for a new door?!

Did you actually ask a painter and decorator to trim a door ? Why not get a joiner?

Abcd3 · 01/07/2019 22:52

The person I asked does carpentry as well as painting and decorating. He said he was happy to trim a door.

He should maybe stick to one trade then cos looking at that door he is not good with a saw! Let him know that you want a new door

Yes, carpentry certainly doesn’t seem to be his strong point - I certainly won’t ask him to do any more of it!
