We're redoing some rooms in a rental property and I don't want magnolia. I'd like something more modern but without costing lots more! It needs to be darker than white, but light enough for a back bedroom that doesn't get much light. I prefer a grey-brown undertone to yellow/cream. Dulux Egyptian cotton looks great if it were a little lighter. Has anyone used Nutmeg White and can share photos? I won't be able to try samples.

Nutmeg white is lovely but I felt it def had pinky tones. Dulux natural hessian is good. There’s another similar one which is greyer I’ll double check name.
Also look at farrow and ball chart and search colours on Instagram-they are really champions of almost white. You can get them colour matched at Johnstone’s just from the paint name.

Dulux Just walnut - this is in artificial light it’s paler still in natural daylight

Oh no, definitely don't want pink undertones! Just walnut is lovely but again from googling I'm not sure if it's a touch dark.

Does anyone have photos of just walnut? Natural hessian looks a little too cream.

I would say just walnut and natural hessian are the same depth of colour just different undertones. They really aren’t dark in real life though. If you go on the dulux app and put either of them in it should show you shades either side and you can select one lighter-i think there are more shades on there than on the colour chart. Also if you search eg ‘duluxnaturalhessian’ on Instagram you will find example pics.

This is natural hessian. I actually hadn’t realised how similar to just walnut until I took these pics! Hope you find ‘the one’!

Timeless? Looks white when first on but then when our ceiling was painted white you could really see the contrast. It's lovely and fresh and modern and very popular.

Farrow and Ball Clunch.

We have Timeless in the hallway. Its beautiful!

Farrow & Ball Ammonite or Strong White have grey/brown undertones. Or French Grey Pale by Little Greene. Easily colour matched by Dulux or (better) Johnstones.

If it’s north facing go for something a little yellower/browner, if south facing go for something a little cooler/greyer.

Thank you everyone for these suggestions! I think timeless is a little too light. God I hate choosing paint colours haha! Going to look up the others but I guess it'll be cheaper if I can find a colour they do in the big 5L tins won't it.

We have Timeless everywhere and it's definitely white. Not brilliant white but it's still a creamy white. Too light for what you want sam.

sambababy · 26/06/2019 20:43

Thanks Enid that's what I thought.

F&B skimming stone. Love it.

Following. Desperate to get rid of the magnolia in our living room.

Natural hessian is lovely. Just had my new kitchen done in it. It doesn’t come up cream once on the walls.
