Help me rethink my plan please

We are doing up a Cotswold stone cottage. The plan for the living space was for an oak floor, to go with some newly plastered walls painted 'white', exposed stone walls and beams with splashes of bright colour as rugs, cushions etc. We can't have the floor, or engineered wood or LVT without significant remedial work to the floor which we can't contemplate for health reasons. So I have to have a carpet, which I think will change the feel of the room significantly. Natural flooring would go but for practical reasons has been ruled out. I've found some carpets which are very textured which I think would look good, but I'm not confident the rest of the original plan would work. Pinterest shows me very muted, cosy, country looks and I'm not sure if I should just go with it.

It seems like your only option if all other floorings are out I'm afraid

Yes the carpet is the only option. I guess I'm not sure about whether to keep all the other plans I had for a fairly minimalist look or whether to rethink the whole look because of the carpet and embrace the cosy cottage thing.

How about going with neutral colours for throws etc but going big and bright with artwork on the walls? In my mind's eye that could work with textured carpet and throws, but I could be spouting rubbish!

You need to decorate with something you actually like, and you're not convincing me that the cosy country cottage look is for you.

You got me. I gave up thinking about it today and went on a sofa lust binge instead. I reckon I can justify it on the basis that any carpet is significantly cheaper than the oak floor we budgeted for.

Have you looked at Unnatural Flooring? They do waterproof fake sisal carpet and rugs.

Prince Charles chose them to supply floor coveringscin his grandma's Scottish castle refurbishment. It was in the Sunday Times a couple of weeks ago don't ya know.

Mosaic I have indeed. It felt like a compromise too far but if it's good enough for Prince Charles I should probably reconsider!

I've been thinking about getting some samples myself for a kitchen/diner/lounge room.

I've also looked at cork floor tiles. They seem to have some interesting properties.

Could you have slate tiles, OP, with a rug as an option?

No tiles or any form of hard flooring can happen without an unacceptable amount of remedial work to the floor. I'm completely reconciled now. I've chosen a beautiful carpet and treated myself to a gorgeous sofa and footstool. Now I just need to figure out curtains/blinds but I think I'm going to wait until the room is finished and the furniture is in before I decide.
