What colour for my living room? (With pics)

I want to completely re-decorate our living room but I don't have a great eye so looking for advice! I have a yearning for grey and ochre with splashes of navy blue...so thinking dark grey carpet, lighter grey sofa, ochre curtains, ochre and navy for the other bits...cushions etc. But what colour to do the walls?? Are feature walls naff or will one colour seem boring in such a big room (16 foot by 17 foot). I like Dulux polished pebble colour but should I accent with a darker grey paint on the chimney breast? Or should I just go for an off white so there's not too much grey? Any advice gratefully received!

Polished pebble with ochre wallpaper? X

YahBasic · 04/05/2019 20:05

I’d go for Annie Sloan Old Ochre (or colour match) on the walls, and then curtains with ochre in them - I’m picturing a geometric print in ochre/navy.

InterchangeableEmma · 04/05/2019 20:11

Ochre is one of my favourite colours, always has been. Your plan sounds great, it'd probably look lovely. Unfortunately ochre is a colour that's so totally of the moment just now that your fabulous colour scheme will date unreasonablely quicklySad

If fear you need to think again.

JudesBiggestFan · 04/05/2019 20:14

InterchangeableEmma I agree...I know it's fashionable and I'm invariably behind the curve so no doubt it would date instantly! So in your opinion is it best to just stay neutral on the walls and just use the accessories to add colour...so they can be easily changed? Thanks all for the help, I am so hopeless at visualising how things will look!

No, no you are very much on the curve with this! I'm sure it's a good while to run, it looks set to become utterly ubiquitous before it crashes and dates long and hard. A shame for such a good colour.

I not a fan of the whole keeping colours for accessories thing really, it works but it's dull and always feels so contrived. Your plan sounds good. Coloured curtains are great, sofas too. Love it.

We’ve just done our living room polished pebble and just wallpapered the chimney breast - I’m really pleased with both. Love the colour of polished pebble, it feels very modern especially as the house was very dated ( built in 1988 with nothing done since then).

@Nearlyadoctor - what's your wallpaper please?

Nearlyadoctor · 05/05/2019 07:45

@wowfudge it’s Sanderson Damson tree in Dijon.

wowfudge · 05/05/2019 07:50

Thank you - I'm off to have a look. Your room looks lovely.

Pale grey carpet please, or risk looking like an office! Navy on the wall with French doors, which will set off some funky curtains with ochre in them. Sofa, I would go for navy over grey to avoid boring office look (unless is gorgeous grey velvet). Go wild with cushions, paint rest of room crown sail white. Wallpaper is the thing that dates...best avoided in living rooms!

White and polished pebble with some blue/grey soft furnishings - this is what I have and it’s a similar lay out to yours, it looks light airy and spacious I love it

Nearlyadoctor · 05/05/2019 11:01

@Wowfudge - thank you, I am aware that it will probably date , but then doesn’t everything?
We also have one wall in the same paper again with PP in the dining room, as there is only glass panel doors between it all needed to flow.

I've just done our front room grey and ochre. Painted all walls grey. One wall a darker grey and the rest lighter grey.
Have added ochre as in the the curtains cushions throws and photo frames and got a lovely grey and ochre rug.
Have had plenty of comments and does make the room feel lovely and warm.

MatchSetPoint · 05/05/2019 14:23

White walls, your first picture the room looks fairly dark white would brighten it up and then you could add colour with accessories. I’m a bit boring though my whole house is white.

JudesBiggestFan · 05/05/2019 19:05

Sorry for the delay! Thank you all for your suggestions...nearlyadoctor your room looks fab...that is exactly the grey I want! Good tip on the carpet as well and glad it's agreed that ochre works well. Really appreciate the help...will get cracking!

My advice would be to think first about the layout and lighting - it looks a little dark, and the furniture a little lonely and marooned.

I’m very trigger happy with walls - could you widen the doors to your conservatory to get more light coming in? It would also make a great entertaining space.
