To divide a wall vertically?

I'll prefix this by saying I'm the least design minded person ever, I have no vision...

I have a 1.5m recess on my landing that I would like to make into a dressing table sort of nook, but the wall that the table will face runs all the way along the stairs, divided by a solid banister.

I want to paint the nook a different colour from my stairs, but the top of the wall above the banister goes all the way along so I can't just have two paints next to each other as I think it will look awful.

Any suggestions on what I can do to break them up? A friend said for a border vertically but I think it would look as bad as the paints next to one another.

Any ideas??

I think I know what you mean and I wouldn’t want to paint a vertical line down the middle of a wall. Is there any particular reason you need them to be different colors? Are you just looking for a way to divide the space? Or is there a color you really want to use?

Do the colors themselves go together?

The only thing I could think of would be to paint a sort of rectangle instead, where one color is inset within the other. Like how people paint headboards sometimes? So you can still get a bit of that color in that space and make it a focal point.

Just to separate the space really, and the landing bit is a little gloomy so could do with a lighter colour. I thought maybe a double line of little mirror tiles that stick on could look passable but don't know how that would truly look.

I think a huge mirror hung/stuck on the wall where you are going to have the dressing table would be good. You can get mirrors cut to your exact dimensions at a good glass shop. Or maybe the kind of mirror that looks like a Georgian window in sections. It will double the light in the hall and be useful too.

I don't think you can really paint the wall two different colours and have it look good.

I would leave the wall one colour, maybe paint the solid divider white as that is really where it's dark (due to the shadow from the light) and then get a bigger mirror to break up the wall. Either a huge mirror that covers most of the wall, or perhaps a smaller one with lights around (if thats your style) to brighten it up. Either way I think the lighting is more important than the wall colour.

I'd paint the solid banister / divider white so it matches your other woodwork and divides the space more while brightening that corner.

I'd fill the dressing area space above your table with a large statement mirror with a light, wide frame.
