If so, do they look nice and are they easy to clean? I have white gloss and am wondering whether to replace them with painted cupboards. Thank you!

We do
Kitchen is over 10 years old and we just touch up every year
Go for hand painted rather than spray painted
Sorry not the best pic!

We do. They do need wiping but no more than finger prints on old gloss kitchen we had. I can see us needing to repaint in a few years to smarten up again, but that’s because we aren’t a careful family!

Thank you both for your replies! Can I ask what type of paint you have on your cupboards, please (e.g. Dulux Easycare kitchen or something like that)? @Justaweeone thank you for the pic - your cupboards look gorgeous!

We had new painted cupboards 11 years ago and they have just been redone. Hand painted on both occasions and could probably have been done a couple of years ago but they weren't too bad. Painting a kitchen is fiddly disruptive and expensive if you are not doing it yourself,

I have painted doors and love them. Just got them last year so no need for touching up yet. We got ours from DIY kitchens and they sent a sample pot of paint with it, which came in handy when I dropped a ladder and scratch one of the doors, dh still hasn't noticed!

My parents repainted their doors last year too and they look fabulous.

Ooh, reading with interest. My kitchen doors must be about 25 years old, and my decorator has suggested that he could paint the inside of one to see how it looks - I think I will say yes.

What's the view on the type of paint though - matte or gloss?

Also, the paint suggested by justaweeone looks pretty expensive so any suggestions for anything a bit cheaper? I have a local B&Q but can't get there just now.

justaweeone · 25/03/2019 14:50

It is expensive but so easy to work with, great coverage and worth every penny
Also I had it colours matched to a farrow and ball colour

We were going to do this, but worried about wear so we went for wrapped paint effect doors. Kitchen is a german make, Rational and is still going strong 15 years later despite a LOT of wear..... in fact we're due a change just because I want a different colour!

We painted our own kitchen cupboards a few years ago and they still look great. The doors were solid wood, so we sugar soaped, sanded, primed and then used a standard eggshell paint. They occasionally need touching up when they get dinged with a pan etc, but that’s a quick easy job.

Often the specific kitchen cupboard paints don’t get very good reviews.... I think you’re better off using a primer that’s suitable for the cupboard material and then an eggshell or gloss paint. It’s a bit more work, but I think it’ll last longer.

Mine are painted, last done about four years ago with Mylands eggshell which has lasted really well & is easy to use & gives very good coverage I have found Mylands more hardwearing than F&B & L&G.

AliceWheeler · 25/03/2019 21:39

Is eggshell paint easier to clean than matt?

OP posts:
dontcallmelen · 25/03/2019 21:44

Yes usually, as it has a slight sheen & is hardwearing, but does depend on what sort of Matt paint you were using.

AliceWheeler · 28/03/2019 09:33

Thank you!

An eggshell finish is far more durable than a matt finish.
The matter the paint the more it will ingress dirt, marks and stains a good eggshell paint is preferable on kitchen cupboards and is easily wipeable and will maintain it's looks longer.
But of course the beauty of a handpainted kitchen is that when it is looking tired after a few years a professional repaint will give years more of service.

Hello, I have a Neptune painted kitchen and they have their own paint (eggshell) which they sell separately. It has been designed with the kitchen in mind.
