help me with my kitchen lights

So, we have a squarish kitchen, quite large, with L shaped run of cupboards down one wall and under the window. The cooker is in the middle of the non window wall.

Then in the middle of the floor we have a table, which seats 6 and where we eat most meals, and hang out most of the time.

At the moment there is a light fittting in the centre of the room with 4 spots aimed randomly at the corners of the room. There are also lights under the top cupboards shedding light down on to the worksurface.

The issues

  1. the sink is dark, and you cast your own shadow. Onviously not during the day, but on a dull day and evening
  2. there is no direct light down on to the table which would be nice
  3. there is no light down on to the worksurfaces, but dh says the under the cupboard lights do this, so more is not needed, my gut says not enough (and guess who uses the room most)

I would like a track of spots in an L above the worksurfaces and the sink, following the line of the units. Then somethign over the table.
dh not keen, says it won't look good, and is only really needed over the sink.
I would like 3 long pendants down over the table, ds has heard about this and begged me not to, he is 6'3" and woudl bump his head on them, we stayed at relatives over Christmas and he kept bumoing his head on theirs, even though the dh in their house is also over 6'

Don;t know what else to do really. Kitchen is old, we've modernised it with new cupboard handles and repainted the doors etc, no chance of a re-do for years to come, so thought doing the lighting would improve it.

Any brilliant ideas from the vipers?

Flexible spotlight bars for your L shaped area. Something like this:

What about something like this for over the dining table?

Tell your tall son to duck when he's near the table!

Thanks, those are exactly the sort of things i would like, but the rest of family are not keen. Hmm

The pendants would have to be really high up though to avoid the head hitting problem, probably only about 50 cm drop from the ceiling, and I'm not sure what that would look like. I sort of thought pendants only looked good if they came down closer to the table.

Just wondering if there is another way of doing this that would work.

I'm going to Ikea with a friend this morning, so I will be having a look there!

Surely he wouldn't bang his head if they're over the table? Unless he was dancing on the table?

I've got a low hanging light fitting over our table and I like it. I think it's my favourite light.

What about pendants that are adjustable - these ones range from 35cm to 150cm in height.

well, I have totaly fallen in love with one of the ikea lights, won't fit in my house, and is expensive, but it is really lovely.

this one

it is so lovely and such good quality, you pull the string and it opens and closes and it is even better in real life.
I nearly just bought it and brought it home!
