What goes with tourquoise walls?

So, dds roomwas painted when she was 7. It was painted to match the curtains which she chose, they were 60s style funky flower print in touriquoise and pink. The walls are turquoise except the window wall which is pink. (all her choice at the time, it looked good!)

She is now nearly 14, and she now likes camoflouge, Marvel comics in an ironic way, green/blue, and hates pink/purple. She is the antithesis of everything girly, has cropped short hair, wears mountain wharehouse style with walking boots and fleeces etc.

Not surprisingly she woudl liek to get rid of the curtains and the pink wall. I woudl really rathe not redecorate the whole room if I don't have to, and she actually likes the tourquoise walls, and they still look in excellent condition.

So, what could I put with them? I thought about navy, she is suggesting a subtle Dr Who print, but if I buy curtains and new bedding, that will be it for the rest if her teens, so really don't wnat to go down the character route.

Any suggestions?

She has seen this, and I can't decide if it would look good, and if it would last for the next 5/6 years?
It is fabric, so i would make curtains, and maybe duvet, or I might buy a plain duvet to match

(I realise that I might have to repaint the whole room by the way, and that woudl be fine)

What colour is the furniture? I'd go with a turquoise/white or a turquoise/black geometric design for curtain fabric. Maybe some matching cushions for the bed.

Brow can also look good with turquoise but would not be to everyone's taste.

Pinkyyy · 11/02/2019 13:17

My advice is to decorate plainly and use curtains/bedding etc to bring in her style. Her interests will likely change again soon and you'll only end up doing it all over again in a couple of years.

WhenDoISleep · 11/02/2019 13:18

I meant brown.

That fabric looks fab - can I ask where it is from?

IncrediblySadToo · 11/02/2019 13:21

I would paint the pink wall navy and make DrWho curtains and buy bedding.

It’s not going to break the bank to replace a bedding set and curtains if she grows out of them!

Navy & turquoise is easy to pretty up or down after Dr Who

Justanothernamechange2 · 11/02/2019 13:21

One of our rooms is turquoise + grey. I love it.

steppemum · 11/02/2019 13:23

The only 'decoration' will be repainting the window wall (well, if I can get away with it), so could do that one colour.
Then all the drama will be curtain and duvet. But I am not planning on replacing them again before she is 18!
(will probably end up painting the turquoise walls before then)

The furniture is old pine (so not yellow, she has an antique chest of drawers), and white ikea.

Fabric is on ebay, I am a bit nervous as I can't feel it to see quality, and it isn't cheap, fortunately her window isn't big

I love turquoise & light brown - I know this is a jumper, but I love that contrast.

steppemum · 11/02/2019 13:46

I could do the wall navy, and buy her a Dr Who bed set, and make that fabric into curtains

steppemum · 11/02/2019 13:47

My Mum used to have a truquoise and brown outfit!

Not sure I can convince her to go for brown though.

Am very tempted by that fabric for curtains - they do a sample piece so maybe get that to see what the quality is like?

steppemum · 11/02/2019 14:10

WhenDoISleep - you are genius, I've just ordered the sample, at £1.99, postage free!

Just hope there is enough of the actual fabric left on the site if I like it!

I am hesitating a bit over all this because ds had his room udpated last year. He was 15, his younger room, like dds was not kiddy, and could well have done for another couple of years, again just like dds. When I did them for them aged 7 or 8, the idea was it would carry them across into teenage years.

ds room is now really cool, grey walls, black curtains, really nice grey/black duvet, it is really a young adult's room.
I had sorted wanted dds to be the same - more young adult, but she wants Dr Who or Marvel, and the deal is that if I do it now, that is it for 5 years (so til the end of school). I ma worried she is going to regret it.

on the other hand, I suspect that while ds will go off to uni and be all cool and sophisticated, dd will go off to uni taking her Dr Who duvet with her Grin

The more I think about it, the more I think I need to paint out the turquoise, go for something more subtle a bit more grown up, pair it with these curtains that she loves and do the dr Who duvet thing. I normally buy 2 duvet sets, but she wants to continue using ds's old Stig duvet (handily navy blue) so I could reserve buying a second set for a year or two, and she can have something more sophisticated if she wants it later.

So, for a little more grown up look, what colour walls with that fabric? Background of fabric is actually black I think

OP posts:
itsboiledeggsagain · 11/02/2019 14:15

I think you should def get rid of the turquoise. 7years is a long time without a repaint and if you are thinking you will need to do it again then just do it now and be done wit it.

steppemum · 11/02/2019 14:23

7 years is a long time without a repaint

not here! That's the whoel house needs redoing then - it took us more than 7 years to get round it all once!

(in my defence I do scrub down and touch up high traffic places, but some of our internal doors have never had a paint, sigh, time, time, time)

OP posts:
itsboiledeggsagain · 11/02/2019 17:32

I'm not saying it is excessively long we have lived here 5 years and haven't done round 2 yet. I just think after 7 years you might as well go thr whole hog rather then have to psyche yourself up in a year or 2 to do thr second half

steppemum · 11/02/2019 17:58

I just think after 7 years you might as well go thr whole hog rather then have to psyche yourself up in a year or 2 to do thr second half

you are absolutley right, as you can see form this thread I am talking myself into getting rid of the turquoise.

her room is always such a tip, even though she has enough storage, and for the last month we have step by step been clearing old stuff out to make it more useable (so she actually will put stuff away) She is neary at the end, so I might as well grab this moment, as it will probably silt up again over the next year or two!

Quite getting inot the idea of the cosmic curtains

So come on then ladies (and gents) what wall colour for those curtains?

OP posts:
Bluntness100 · 11/02/2019 18:05

I wouldn't do navy, but I'd do something like a teal window wall, so tonaly it flows.

The bedding i wouldn't do character, she's not going to like that at 17. So do something plain, teal curtains and bedding, that sort of thing. She can then put posters or pics up as she sees fit.

GarethSouthgatesWaistcoat · 11/02/2019 20:47

Is the ceiling white? I'd probably paint it the window wall the same teal and do ready made navy curtains/ duvet/ accessories.

Does the current lampshade need replacing? How about a copper lined one? Like the Made.com ones.

I'd buy black Ikea frames and/or the Ikea picture shelves (can be painted) and let her frame Dr Who posters to her heart's content Smile

Bit more grown up and easier to change.

steppemum · 11/02/2019 21:26

what teal are you referring to, as I am not getting the colour you mean, sorry.

ceiling is white revolting artex as are skirtings, and door. they are all remaining white

OP posts:
GarethSouthgatesWaistcoat · 11/02/2019 21:42

Sorry it all ran together! Yes meant keep ceiling white and paint window wall teal like the other walls.

Lots of readymade 'galaxy' bedding on Amazon/ebay/google if you want to save the hassle of making.

LonelyOversharer · 11/02/2019 21:50

Have you seen the galaxy sticker decals you buy on amazon? They look a lot like the curtain material (which looks fab, btw). I'd keep the turquoise if it's a nice bright colour (won't match if it's pastel), and do the pink wall navy. My pre-teen (now 16) picked navy for her ceiling Confused, it still looks fab!

Disclaimer: half my house is turquoise. This is not to anyone but me everyones taste.

steppemum · 11/02/2019 21:59

other walls are bright turquoise, not really teal.

I think I have talked myself into repainting the whoel room, just wondering what colour, to go with the galaxy curtains.

I will haven't looked for galaxy bedding, that is a great idea, if the colours are right it will take her into young adulthood (sod it, I'd have those curtains in MY bedroom!)

OP posts:
GarethSouthgatesWaistcoat · 11/02/2019 22:19

I have zero experience with decals but the galaxy ones look quite cool in photos! Or you could go the duvet route for a big block of galaxy pattern if that's easier (and more future-proof).

Navy or grey (any shade) are popular at the moment and would go well with any shade of galaxy print. I'm quite partial to a deep/dusky blue (stormcloud-ish) myself. I also like teal (biased) Grin

Is the floor carpet? What colour?

steppemum · 11/02/2019 23:11

floor is dark blue carpet, that won;'t change either.

I'm thinking a dusky blue/grey, but not too dark, the room isn't huge, and needs the light

Dd was very excited when I said the galaxy curtains maybe a winner. I actually think they will look really good, and a dusky grey/blue will be much more grown up than the current turquoise and pink, and I think that print could be quite grown up.

Her main wall picture is the periodic table, she is my little geek, and so I suspect that Dr Who will feature in her life for a long time. Se really needs to live in an episode of Big Bang Theory!

The galaxy bedding is AMAZING, unfortunately it is all microfibre or polyester, so she may have to make do with a plain deep blue/teal or some batik /tie dye which gives the galaxy effect
