Help - I've glued the rug to the carpet

I move in a few days. Years ago I used carpet tape to hold a rug still on a carpet (the rug was to protect the carpet from my office chair). I move in a few days and I've realised that while I can remove the rug, the tape has degraded and is embedded in the carpet.
Advice needed on how to remove the tape?

Try nail polish remover the acetone should dissolved the glue but just use a tiny amount on a bit of carpet if it works dont do any more for a few hours to make sure the acetone has not damaged the carpet .
Or use a warm hair dryer / hot water bottle to soften the glue so it can be pealed / rubbed off
