Can anyone recommend a good grey paint for walls?

I'd like to paint my bedroom pale grey and wondered whether anyone could recommend a good shade. My budget doesn't stretch to Farrow & Ball, so Dulux would be ideal. I'm wondering about Just Walnut, Polished Pebble (don't know if it's too dark?), Ashen White, Sultana Spice 6, and some others - has anyone tried any of these or have any other recommendations? I'm looking for something that's definitely not white (not the kind of thing where you can hardly tell whether it's white or not), but still light. As it's a small room a dark colour would be too heavy I think. Thanks for any ideas!

I have a lot of grey in my house. Polished pebbles is quite light, goose down is a bit dark and chic shadow is another good one. Dulux easy care in any of these shade/ colours is the best. Easy to wipe off the marks and any dirty.

'Ammonite'

It's farrow and ball but get a sample Swatch and get it colour matched . It's the perfect very light grey, you won't be disappointed

Just walnut is a lovely really soft grey.

No blue undertones

MarthasGinYard · 04/02/2019 08:09

Seeing it's a small room definitely avoid polished pebble.

JessicaCH · 04/02/2019 12:03

Thanks, everyone! MarthasGinYard, why would you avoid Polished Pebble for a small room, please?

We were going to paint small bedroom in PP it was way darker than I imagined. It would have made room look smaller.

We went with the JW instead

JessicaCH · 04/02/2019 12:56

It sounds like Just Walnut might be perfect. Did it have enough colour in that it definitely looked grey, not off-white?

we have goose down and its very pretty in the room we have it in.

MarthasGinYard · 04/02/2019 14:02

Yes Op many visitors ask what colour we have it's in the hall to.

It's a very pale grey but yes against the white ceiling you can tell it's grey. We love it.

Get a tester and pop a stripe next to white.

The name put me off at first as I think of walnuts as wrinkly browny beige nuts rather than grey Grin

Most of my house is Just Walnut Smile I love it! It's light, soft, not too cold. We tried Polished Pebble but it was way too dark and cold.

Just had our lounge and dining room done in polished pebble and really love it, definitely has slightly blue undertones but is a very pale soft grey. I liked just walnut but it was more beige than grey when tested on our walls.

Pebble shore Dulux, more grey than Just Walnut but warm and not blue like Polished Pebble.

If you're near to a B&Q then I would go and get a load of the grey paint cards (free), and take them home to look at them in the actual room - it's surprising how different they sometimes look.

Once you've narrowed it down to a couple then you could get small samples, which you could paint samples in a few places around the room to see how it changes with the light.

I'm a bit snobby about paints (previous bad experience with cheapo ones) and really rate Little Green paints, but they didn't do the colours I wanted so I went for the premium Valspar range from B&Q and was really impressed with how well it went on, and the coverage.

mamapud · 07/02/2019 23:06

Pebble shore is lovely and is a true pale grey, I had about 15 samples for my daughter's room, some had lilac shades, some blue and some just looked dirty.
We've just moved and wanted a cheap paint for a temporary colour and got a Leyland grey paint from B&Q and for a huge tub it was £14 and everyone has commented what a lovely colour it is.

itsbritneybiatches · 07/02/2019 23:08

I'd mix grey with some white walls. Grey on its own can look a bit meh.

Unless you have pure white furniture

mrsjackrussell · 07/02/2019 23:15

I hunted everywhere for a pale gray. Ended up with a lovely one from Wilco's. I can't remember the name though. Very light gray.

JessicaCH · 08/02/2019 13:00

Thank you so much for the replies. I've got some paint samples and it's unbelievable how they look - they're all supposed to be pale grey and they've come out blue, white, brown and darkish grey! Just Walnut currently looks rather lilac, bizarrely - I'm hoping it'll look grey when it dries!

@mamapud, do you happen to remember the name of the Leyland grey paint that you got? I'll also try the Pebble Shore!

I have painted with a dove/just walnut combination everywhere and it is lovely. Also got a few bits in polished pebble.

The dove looks dark as it goes on, but I have painted a whole room in it and it just seems to expand the space, it is lovely.

CoperCabana · 08/02/2019 13:31

I have Just Walnut in my front room and I think it looks white in some lights. In fact, I am sure a friend commented on how we hadn’t painted over the builders white in there, but we had. Testers are essential.

mamapud · 08/02/2019 19:09

Hey, I can't remember off hand but it there are only 2 grey colours and it was the lightest one it's £14 for 10 litres! We only needed 2 coats of it, for the bathroom I bought an anti mould additive from kingfisher paints and added it to it, as I hated the sheen on all the bathroom paints.

Nearlyadoctor · 10/02/2019 15:42

Polished pebble in lounge and dining room pics. Just waiting for roman blind and curtains to be made 😃. We were going for rock salt in hall / stairs and landing but may now go PP again

Polished pebble!

spreadingchestnuttree · 10/02/2019 23:18

@Nearlyadoctor I'd love to know where your wallpaper is from?

IHeartKingThistle · 10/02/2019 23:22

I hate grey and our lounge is Just Walnut ! I wouldn't call it grey at all - you can only see it isn't white when it's up against the white ceiling. I love it though, really soft.

FanSpamTastic · 10/02/2019 23:24

I've got Dulux "Engraved Locket". It tones really well with duck egg blue.
