Empty space in living room - what to fill it with?

We are lucky enough to have a large living room but have been left with this dead space behind sofa and next to bookcases. We already have a sideboard elsewhere. Other than pictures which the wall obviously needs (!) what should we put here? Creative ideas welcome.

A piano!

Apparentlychilled · 24/01/2019 15:53

What else is in the room? Can we see a photo that shows the room as a whole?

Squirrelonwheels · 24/01/2019 15:54

That is actually one of the ideas! But maybe in a few years time when the DC are old enough to make use of it 😊

A long console table behind the sofa with candles/lanterns/lamps on it?

Squirrelonwheels · 24/01/2019 15:56

Would rather not show the rest of the room as it’s identifying, but to the left of that view is 2 sofas grouped around a rug and the TV, so that’s the “cosy” area. The sideboard is in another bit of the room. To the right of the photo is a wall of bookcases. No need for play storage as we have a playroom. I know it’s a nice problem to have!

Is there a window anywhere in the room?

TulipsInbloom1 · 24/01/2019 15:58

Is where you are standing the door into the room? What is on the right hand side of the bookcases?

Doghorsechicken · 24/01/2019 16:00

What about an arrangement of plants? Plants on different levels so you might need some stands that are different heights.

PeridotCricket · 24/01/2019 16:07

Pot plant and a standard lamp.

More bookcases Smile

icantthinkofanotherone · 24/01/2019 16:09

A giant swiss cheese plant.

Bluntness100 · 24/01/2019 16:09

Yes, I'd also put a big plant in there, a very tall one, about five or six feet. In a fantastic pot.

Squirrelonwheels · 24/01/2019 16:12

I am a bit of a plant lady so I like the plant ideas! Thanks all 😊

Cat tree. Every home should have a cat Smile

Squirrelonwheels · 24/01/2019 17:25

I agree re. cat but severe allergy in the family says otherwise ☹️

Make it a reading corner.

Nice armchair, blanket, lamp, small table with a couple of small plants and a big plant.

Or just get the piano now. Start them young.

fabulousathome · 27/01/2019 00:41

Leave it empty. Nice to have space.

brick15 · 27/01/2019 00:54

A large upright mirror

ExplodedPeach · 28/01/2019 14:10

A small armchair, a lamp, a side table, and a few plants - ideal for reading right by the bookcase!

PizzaPlanet · 29/01/2019 08:34

I’ve got exactly the same problem. Already got bookcase, sideboard, tv unit, sofas, armchair, 2 side tables. Perhaps a small console?

Rupster · 29/01/2019 12:14

You could put a writing/computer desk where the bookcase is, and move the bookcase to the side.

Rupster · 29/01/2019 12:16

... or a dining table?

ChocolateStash · 29/01/2019 12:22

A large bean bag or area to sit and read
