Any reviews on Alexa??

So my kids and dh are bugging me to get an Alexa for the house, I've looked on amazon for the reviews (obviously all positive as it's an amazon product) and I've tried to read all the actions it offers but still not getting what it really does, I like the sound of the intercom system in the house (happy to purchase two if they are good for this) we're not a particularly busy holdhouse or a high tech one, are they worth it and what else can I do with it? TIA ladies. X

I have a few around the house. I like having the radio on and the dots are handy. I use one as a white noise machine in the baby’s room. Our tv is connected and some plugs, we plan to automate the house more this year. Love Alexa. I am told Google is just as good.

We have four, I use it as an intercom as we have a three storey house and my husband's office is on the top floor but also we socialise quite a lot so I have them paired and can play the same music throughout downstairs as opposed to in just one room, past that it's alarms, reminders, shopping lists etc, I also find it quite useful to add things to my ocado shopping basket when I find I need something.

In terms of music I like the fact I can ask it for any song or artist and it plays it, as opposed to manually searching, but also so can my guests.

Freshsheets9 · 25/01/2019 12:18

I love ours.

When I’m cooking and need to add something to the shopping list it’s great. Plus we can ask for any song or the radio. Set reminders for when I’m leaving the house etc.

We have only just got it, so at the moment we are at the basics, weather, asking questions, kids have a laugh with it. I do plan to learn more, and get one for upstairs soon.

Alexa is cheaper than most digital DAB radios you can buy and provides a good level of station coverage. This alone makes it worth it. Obviously there are alot of other capabilities as well. Certainly worth a try.

Omgineedanamechange · 25/01/2019 12:32

Love mine, ordered a second one. We use it mainly for the radio, operating the smart lights and plugs, and shopping lists. Love messing about with some of its more wacky skills. We set a routine up at Christmas so when you said “Santa’s coming” the Christmas lights came on and Christmas songs started playing, to turn it off you said “bah humbug”
We get to bark like a dog when someone knocks on the door too, and we do the Star Trek red alert and auto destruct sounds, because we can.😃

I've got two dots coming at the end of January.

How do shopping lists work?

Can I make an Asda
Shopping list and then it will add it to the actual Asda shop website?

itsbritneybiatches · 25/01/2019 12:42

If I have I tunes can I link the dots to my phone and then link the dots together so there is the same music at the same
Time in different rooms?

Polkapjs · 30/01/2019 21:54

How does intercom work? Love this idea “Tea’s ready” announcements would be useful!

RCohle · 30/01/2019 21:56

I bought one and sent it back because I couldn't really find anything to use it for. Working out the precise right way to phrase things so it worked was so much more faff than just using my phone to do whatever.

Yazoooooooo · 30/01/2019 21:57

@Polkapjs

You’d need two and you’d name them say bedroom and kitchen. When dinner is ready you say Alexa drop in on bedroom and tadaaaaa you can speak to whoever is in there and they can speak to you.

Also works with Alexas in other houses. So I can drop in on my mum for example. First time we did it my dad just kept putting the tv up because he couldn’t work out what the noise was.

I am so pro-Alexa. Very handy little lady she is.

Yazoooooooo · 30/01/2019 21:59

@itsbritneybiatches

Yes you can create a group. You’d call it X and just tell Alexa play on X and she would. I’ve never used iTunes on mine though as I have Spotify so just check she works with iTunes, she should though.

MoorMummy · 30/01/2019 21:59

I’ve three, a show, an echo and a dot, love them all! Spotify, shopping list and reminders xx

anniehm · 30/01/2019 22:03

We have a couple, they are great.

WhatWouldTheDoctorDo · 30/01/2019 22:05

Love ours, we have 5. Gets used as an intercom a lot (we live in a townhouse), as a radio/music player everywhere (we have amazon music), an alarm in the morning, a timer in the kitchen, listen to alexa generated playlists a lot 'alexa, play some chill out music' etc., turn smart plugs and lamps on and off, and DS is always asking it jokes, the day's weather, names of songs that are playing, random facts and the such like. Bought them all on different Black Friday deals. They replaced our alarm clocks and kitchen radio and a dot in the living room bounces music to be played on a Sonos speaker.

WhatWouldTheDoctorDo · 30/01/2019 22:06

Oh yes, shopping list - I love that. Can add things to it from most rooms in the house!

Duvetday2day · 30/01/2019 22:16

I’m going to have to purchase another for upstairs! Then I can shout at the DC, I didn’t know there was an intercom system!

Lina86 · 13/02/2019 22:18

Omgineedanamechange That's made me lol, I purchased one yesterday so will defiantly look in to the barking at the door one!

We love ours . Music . Ds will ask what words mean, reminders , alarm clock,

Of course you can do most things another way but it’s fun

Princesspond · 13/02/2019 22:38

We use ours most for ‘what time is it’ 🙈adding things to shopping list, playing radio / music via Sonos. Burglar deterrent when we are out. Have a smart light that works with it. The children do endless quizzes and open the magic door stories.

Starlight456 · 13/02/2019 23:06

Ds also plays lemonade stand a lot

PizzaPlanet · 14/02/2019 22:02

Gosh we barely use ours! It seems a bit annoying- maybe we’re not getting the most out of it!

TheBreastmilksOnMe · 14/02/2019 22:06

Those of you with Alexa’s, please please ask it what’s Welsh for ‘100’ and tell me what she says?

Lina86 · 15/02/2019 20:40

@TheBreastmilksOnMe just asked it, while my kids are here 🙈 Luckily their to absorbed in minions to notice what she said! Do ask guys (just make sure dc aren't around when you do!)
