What can I do with this fireplace?

I quite like the white mantelpiece but want rid of the naff electric fire and fake marble surround (it's just plastic). We don't have a chimney so it's not a "real" fireplace but could we just have the bit inside the mantelpiece as brick? I like the idea of tiles too.

Also not sure how much all of this would cost as not sure what it looks like behind there!

You could have bricks or tiles. You would need to make sure the bottom of the fireplace was levelled off before tiling or you would risk the tiles cracking.
Tiles:

Brick:

No idea on cost. Depends on how good you/partner are at DIY - saves paying someone else. Quality of tiles used, how much leveller you would need to correct the floor of the fireplace, how many DIY tools you already have, etc.

Price will also depend on whether you plan to tile where you currently have the marble effect surround. This image combines brick and tile:

Love those pics thank you! That's something I can show someone to get a quote, I don't really trust me or my dh to do it!
