Just that really!

We have book shelves with no books on just general crap. Im thinking books but there's isn't even really anywhere to put a chair 🤦🏻‍♀ It's a weird walk through room between two rooms and the hallway and a window on the other wall and I've no idea what to do with it, the house is due to go on market and I really want to 'dress ' it in some way to improve it?? Really stuck for ideas

Is there any reason not to leave it as a walkway?

Can you pretty up the bookshelves?

I’d fill the shelves with books and get a nice comfy reading chair and foot stool and an arching over floor lamp.

Or fill the shelves with toys and boxes of organised kids stuff and put a low seat under the window .

What I meant was conceal the doors as more bookshelves.

Library/reading nook - make use of all the shelves. Comfy armchair, 2 if possible. Lamps. Some decor on the walls - mirror, prints, etc.
This sort of idea.

Agree with desk with chair under window/ shelves full of books/ reading chair in front of books with a tall reading lamp. So you have a nice study area. Put selection of framed photos or prints over the radiator .

I agree with others, dress it up as a reading corner

Yes chair in front of bookcase.

Is it big enough you could put a console table on a side or small round table in the middle, and just put a vase of flowers on it?

Combination of everyone else's thoughts! Chair angled in front of one bookcase with a small round table – something light/clear to not clutter up a busy space. Big mirror above radiator as suggested – and a slim console over radiator too, with a vase of flowers and a ceramic bowl. Remove two doors and add a runner rug: basically lean in to the sense it's a walk-through/central foyer, rather than trying to create a fake activities room.

But mainly if you're putting it on the market, get rid of the crap on the shelves (hide it in the car boot or loft if you need to keep it!) and actually fill the shelves with books, which will instantly look a lot more purposeful.

You say no space for desk - not even a small one in front of the window? This kind of idea. Because then you'll have created a study, which would be a selling point.

We could do with the dimensions really.

@themincepiesaremine wheres that pic from? That looks soo similar to the layout / size of this room! Loving the idea of mirror/radiator cover/table set up but unfortunately this wouldn't work as we have a Sheila Maid above the radiator which we wouldn't/couldn't move. Thinking office/reading space is the way to go here. Thanks everyone

It was just a quick Google image on "desk bookcase window". Does this link work?

What I meant was conceal the doors as more bookshelves.

That wouldn’t work for frequently used doors as the weight would rip out the hinges.

That’s why it’s a design style reserved for secret passages lol - the assumption is that secret passages are infrequently used.

Aaaahfuck · 07/01/2019 12:50

Table in the middle of the room as a desk/hobby/craft room?

Batteriesallgone · 07/01/2019 12:50

Google console tables OP. They are super narrow so wouldn’t take up much space under the window. A stool would tuck neatly under and not stick out into the walkway.

queenqueenqueen · 07/01/2019 14:24

@themincepiesaremine ooh thanks, love the desk that would work really well in the room. We've got so much kids crap in there but after Xmas I want a serious clear out - my DCs seem to only play with the same few toys despite having a room full!!

Ikea sell console type dressing tables, we got an inexpensive cushioned stool on wheels from EBay designed for beauticians I think.

HermioneWaslib · 07/01/2019 15:09

You aren’t thinking about this as someone selling a house! Get rid of the Sheila’s maid when you go on the market and put a small sofa in front of the radiator - not ideal but find for staging to sell. Agree with window desk. If dh made the shelves I’m sure he could add this. I’d style it as a playroom / homework room but only with nice toys in it!
