Anyone else dyed their own sofa cushions?

Thinking of dying my sofa with Dylon Black. Absolutely love my sofa (can’t afford a new one anyway) just find the colours looking a bit worn.
It’s a massive corner sofa, can’t figure out what type of fabric it is - no labels anywhere! And it’s a creamy and brown one.
Has anyone dyed their own sofa cushions? If so, how did you do it?

Yes; ikea ektorp covers, which are cotton - any other fabric won't work well/at all. You need more dye than the packet advises as the fabric is heavy duty. Don't attempt to hand-dye it, put it in the washing machine or else the result won't be uniform. Also be careful to check the stitching thread, if it's polyester and a contrasting colour, it won't take the dye and will be visible as a result. Finally, wash them through a couple of times before you use them as you don't want any dye residue staining your clothes.

Good luck!

Used Dylon Black on my Ikea sofa covers but they were already black, just faded with sunlight.

Amazing results though. Looks brand new.

Thank you :) deltag, was planning on buying a small tub for one of the smaller cushions and see how it goes! At least now I know to definitely machine wash them

Good advice from DeltaG
Just to add that it's important to hot wash the covers before you dye, as any greasy patches might not take the dye.
And be prepared to spend a lot on dye for an entire sofa! I looked at having it professionally done, but eventually decided it would cost the same to have a brand new Ikea sofa instead!

Alanamay, I know, I did look at buying another one, the thing is my one is massive and so comfy and I got it for nothing (parents were upgrading), May just have to leave it as is!
