How do I measure curtains?

I'm moving into a new house next week and have taken the measurements of the bedroom windows, but now I have no idea what to do with them Blush

Do we need to buy curtains that are double the length of the window so they've got some folds in when they're shut?

All the pre-made curtains I seem to be able to find online go down to the floor, rather than sitting just below the windowsill. I have zero sewing skills and no family nearby who can help - does anyone have any recommendations for what they've done? Made-to-measure are really far out of my budget!

I'm aware this is a really stupid post, but I've never owned a house before so curtains/blinds have already been in place when I've moved in somewhere!

You need to basically double the width to get the folds. Length tends to be 90 (to the floor) or 72 (half way down the wall). Mine are 72 as 90's tend to gather dog hairs on the bottom. (apologies in inches as always do curtains in inches)

My DP measured in inches so no problem! Thanks for your help - this is turning out to be more difficult than finding a sofa!
