Please help me with my lounge!

We have been renovating our newly bought house and I'm happy with most of it but my lounge just doesn't look right. I usually stay quiet light and neutral ( Scandinavian) in my colour schemes but I really wanted these dark brown chesterfield sofas and I tried to go for teal as an accent colour... but it all looks awful and miss matched and I don't know how to tie it all together... I can paint the walls or change the rug and lights but sofas need to stay. How do I get it country house cosy?
Help!

Your room is quite big and so I think a colour as light as cream doesn't lend itself well to cosy unfortunately. If you have a smaller room with low ceilings I think it may carry the cream, but I'd be going for something darker albeit still neutral myself.

Rupster · 06/12/2018 09:53

I don't know what your budget is, but personally I would change the fireplace as I think it looks a little dated.

I would also go for a stronger flooring colour and maybe a slightly stronger wall colour. Once you put things on the wall, that will also make it feel more homely.

SomethingAboutNothing · 06/12/2018 10:04

Agree with previous poster, the floor ideally would be a darker wood, and the walls a warmer colour. Also, the lamp doesn't really tie in with the country cottage style.

brizzledrizzle · 06/12/2018 10:04

I'd go for a bold coloured rug and cushions and change the wall colour from cream to something warmer and then get some pictures up. I agree with the PP who said to change the fireplace if you can.

cakeandteajustforme · 06/12/2018 10:10

It's not very country cottage but I'd be tempted to put big full height mirrors on each wall between the windows/fireplace. Then a painting above the fireplace. And agree with the other, change the fireplace.

I'll try and find a pic.

I think the floor colour is nice, and the curtains. In fact I think most of it is fine. Ditch the red candles... presumably they're just for Christmas.

Haricot · 06/12/2018 10:12

Good lighting will make the room much cosier. Only switch on the ceiling light when someone first enters the room in order to then switch on some table lamps / floor lamps. Then switch the ceiling light off. Fit a dimmer to the ceiling light too.

JosephineHass · 06/12/2018 10:13

Hmm, like the sofas they are on the right way to country style, but there is a lot of white colour which is creating cold feeling in my opinion.
However I would add more warm colours, sort of autumn colours- curtains, patterned cushions, chunky blankets...
Also your chandelier isn't exactly in a country style, so I would be looking for something like wrought iron or a wicker.🤷🏻‍♀️
Overall I would add autumn colours, wicker, wooden and wrought iron accents.
Country style is about warmth and cosy atmosphere.

cakeandteajustforme · 06/12/2018 10:13

Mirror example. The key is to try and bounce as much light as possible into the room.

I think he curtains also look slightly wrong colour, hard to see in photo behind ceiling light but they need to be stronger teal, the colours in the rug are nice.

Def needs pictures on walls as pp

Warm and cosy colours

strongandlong · 06/12/2018 10:25

I don't think it needs anything too radical.

Change the rug and curtains to warmer colours.
Don't use the ceiling lights (as per pp).
Put some pictures up.

What's on the wall opposite the fireplace?

OrcinusOrca · 06/12/2018 11:31

These are the colours in my living room and dining room. I thought they would make it too dark as everything was cream before, but they're fine. Farrow and Ball Elephant's Breath and Mizzle.

The flooring has just gone down and is the same as other parts of the house so needs to stay.. it's slightly white washed oak

I'm unfortunately not massively keen on autumn colours don't like red and orange... :/

I think it’s the fireplace and the couches don’t match which is why it looks funny. It needs pictures on the walls too.

peachypetite · 06/12/2018 12:07

It's crying out for some colour!! Agree the fire is dated.

MummyNessi · 06/12/2018 12:08

The fireplace would be difficult to change... it was an awful yellow colour so I white washed it.. and added the beam.
Agree that the room is too white...

I can't see the photos right now, but don't worry about a wooden floor, its like jeans it goes with everything.

Plants, mirrors, and a good big rug can transform a room, but LIGHTS are the most important thing (to me anyway).

Madeline88 · 06/12/2018 12:12

Could you stain the mantle to dark brown? If keeping it light, how about getting a light wood coffee table and a light wooden light fitting like from David truebridge. I like the rug. I would get an eclectic mixture of old and modern lamps to tie in the room.

OldGrinch · 06/12/2018 12:13

I think the room is lovely OP, what about a different rug with a more distinctive colour or pattern? There will be loads in the Jan sales, I like the Barker and Stonehouse ones. What colours do you like?

3luckystars · 06/12/2018 12:14

Ok i can see the pictures now, im on my phone.

You have nothing on the walls!! The colour and the fireplace are lovely, you need mirrors, art, and some big plants and LIGHTING.

Slightlyjaded · 06/12/2018 12:15

It's an easy fix.

Wall colours and light fittings.

Floor is fine. Light floor can take a rug and the one you have is fine.

I would go for a colour a bit like the green in Orcinus picture. Farrow and Ball Dix Blue or GreenBlue would be good. A big mirror over the fireplace and I am afraid I would change the light fitting, but mostly use lamps for your lighting.
