Please help me with my lounge!

We have been renovating our newly bought house and I'm happy with most of it but my lounge just doesn't look right. I usually stay quiet light and neutral ( Scandinavian) in my colour schemes but I really wanted these dark brown chesterfield sofas and I tried to go for teal as an accent colour... but it all looks awful and miss matched and I don't know how to tie it all together... I can paint the walls or change the rug and lights but sofas need to stay. How do I get it country house cosy?

Ooh yes get some plants in there too. A snake plant or a monstera on the hearth anc a big fiddle leaf elsewhere.

MummyNessi · 06/12/2018 12:19

Ok I'm getting some good ideas, thank you!
So if I painted the walls a blue/green/ gray.
Plants, and pictures on the wall but what? I was going to go with black and white photos in black frames or an print with teal in it? Or a teal framed mirror?

Should I paint the fireplace as well? ( the bricks I mean)
I can change the coffee table to a lighter wood one perhaps?

How about this wall colour? I'd have a bit of tartan or herringbone somewhere too - maybe a rug or chair.

That's nice kitten! I like rustic and that fireplace is gorgeous!

I think a large country style clock over the fireplace or large landscape painting and maybe wallpaper on that wall would work.
Personally I'd like bookshelves or side board each side of fireplace. The lampshades are very cold looking. I'd try large fabric ones in teal. I'd also have more natural accessories like a log basket and wooden fruit bowl. We'll done on the fireplace I really like it. I'm sure it's a great improvement.

Not teal or black and white for pictures. If you are changing the wall colour, I’d leave the fire place like it is and get a great abstract print in the scandi neutrals that you like and frame it in light wood to go with the mantle and get a light wood light fitting and get rid of the chandelier.

I don’t think there is much you need to change. Lucylugs photos show what you could do with your existing scheme.

Personally I’d go with a big pale shaggy rug rather than what you have at the moment. It would really soften the space. Mirrors, framed pictures, some interesting lamps and you’re good to go.

Ridingthegravytrain · 06/12/2018 12:38

Something above the fireplace. Personally I would go with a mirror. And the wooden mantle looks wrong. Needs to be painted or stained.

MummyNessi · 06/12/2018 12:50

Lucylugs i like the pictures!

I was just sprinting in to shout step away from the teal when Lucy beat me to it, I love her first picture.

There's potential there for lovely Scandi cosiness. You need to embrace softer, more natural textures, your sheepskin stool is gorgeous, and your rug gives a nice bit of boho softness.

Your sofas are a bit heavy looking, so have a couple of wool (not chenille or shiny) rugs chucked artfully on them. Could you replace that heavy wooden chest with something on legs so it looks airier? It's a bit Mexican Oak pirate.

Cream or white curtains would look good, for me the grey is too heavy with the sofas, I think a low-ceiling space like this can only really take one heavy thing.

Definitely go wicker for the lampshades. How about a few plants, tiny ones on your mantlepiece and maybe a mid to large sized one in a wicker pot somewhere else?

Lucylugs · 06/12/2018 13:12

@MummyNessi Happy to help! Smile

ExplodedPeach · 06/12/2018 13:22

I would paint the walls a dark colour, maybe a navy, dark green etc, or at least a mid-dark colour in a muted shade. Then the light floor, fireplace and curtains can brighten the room, have a mirror or two to add light and some lamps, maybe a big pale coloured rug and some cushions in complementing colours.

NoSquirrels · 06/12/2018 13:30

I think you just need more pattern, stuff on the walls and some end tables with lamps or a nice big floor-standing lamp behind the sofa that backs to the curtains.

MummyNessi · 06/12/2018 13:55

Ok I quite like that tree above the fireplace but I also like the idea of a mirror. I'll get more cushions and trows fluffy, tartan, knitted..? And maybe go a bit botanical for wall prints? And find a lighter coffee table and add wooden or textile lamps to start?

Something about the curtains isn't working.

I'd be tempted to have something like Dix Blue (or equivalent) on the walls and pale (lined) curtains. Then keep the rest of the colours very neutral - whites/creams/woods etc and some plant greenery Smile

I'm not that good at this either!

The Dulux visualizer is good for trying out colours Smile

Lucy's pics are great inspo if you don't want to paint the walls.

Twinningsloverbutnotanymore · 06/12/2018 14:09

You need mirrors, that fireplace needs something above it and it would help a lot. You need a strong colour with those lovely sofas and poppy colours as well. It's all well going for dark walls but you need to lift it with bright colours too.

The rug is a good size but not great, you need to think of a neutral colour to bounce the light off. Those curtains aren't great (sorry) they are just drowning the light in the room. you need proper length curtains and lovely tie backs. Have a look at Farrow and Ball and look at their colours, the Hague blue would work well and you don't have to be too adventurous and do all 4 walls (although it does make it super cosy). Accents of white/cream throws and different materials as well - play with furs and velvets.

I love interiors! haha

FaceLikeAPairOfTits · 06/12/2018 14:23

I think you need to work out what 'cosy' means to you. Is it depth of colour like the green picture upthread, or is it a neutral palette which when lit in the evenings with sympathetic lighting feels cosy?

I'd have reservations about something like Dix Blue, IME those F&B strong colours look great in period homes but I don't think they look right in newer properties, they somehow look garish and bright rather than having depth and soul.

cherrysfortea · 06/12/2018 14:29

The floor is fine but the fireplace needs to go to be honest

I love the sofas (I have them in red)

I would get rid of the rug and get a black and white woven type one, and get an industrial light fitting

DonaldDucksTowel · 06/12/2018 14:30

I think you need to pull the sofas away from the wall a bit so they’re more central
Get something in the walls
Make your curtains look more intentional either with the toilet roll trick or with tie backs (or both)
And get rid of that little stool and whatever else is on the fireplace
Oh and plants! It needs plants!

GarethSouthgatesWaistcoat · 06/12/2018 15:39

Okay if not a soft greeny-blue on the walls perhaps a pale greige?

Not country cottage but those Berber-esque neutral zigzag rugs are popular at the moment.

I don't mind the fireplace too much now it's white. I appreciate these things are difficult to change. Not sure about the blocky mantel beam you've added (sorry!)
A thinner 'plank' stained a mid tone may have worked better. If it's too late to change maybe stain a little darker as a pp suggested and definitely add a mirror or picture above. That should help!

GarethSouthgatesWaistcoat · 06/12/2018 15:45

Also what's opposite the fireplace - is it a sideboard? I think it's making everything feel crammed. As per pp move the sofas out from the fireplace and keep that wall free of furniture.

You could look to have low cabinets/shelves/small sideboard etc in the alcove/s to improve storage/surface space.

prismWitch · 06/12/2018 15:52

I think it needs a nice big mirror on top of the fireplace, to bounce some light around and change of a coffe table. As sofas are quite heavy, I think you needs something lighter?
Maybe matching the mantel and your floorboards?

Add some pictures on a wall and big green plant in a corner. Also I agree that curtains are quite dark. I cannot see the teal scheme that you were talking about. Is it only rug?

BettyBooJustDoinTheDoo · 06/12/2018 16:00

How about this look.

I’m very much in the minority here but I really like your fireplace, I think it adds character it just needs better ‘cosy’ dressing maybe these pics will give some inspiration.
