Please help me with my lounge!

We have been renovating our newly bought house and I'm happy with most of it but my lounge just doesn't look right. I usually stay quiet light and neutral ( Scandinavian) in my colour schemes but I really wanted these dark brown chesterfield sofas and I tried to go for teal as an accent colour... but it all looks awful and miss matched and I don't know how to tie it all together... I can paint the walls or change the rug and lights but sofas need to stay. How do I get it country house cosy?
Help!

The issue is the brown and teal don't go together at all.

As much as both are lovely individually they clash and so it looks as though you've been gifted the sofas. You need to decide if you're going to keep the teal or the brown.

I would keep the sofas as they're lovely and have cream decor and a burnt orange as an accent colour.

How about this look as well.

I'd change the fireplace.
Otherwise you are just tinkering with change.
That fireplace needs to go. Sorry MummyNessi

mybumpismostlypudding · 06/12/2018 17:18

I think you need to pull the sofas away from the wall slightly, and you need a bigger rug, so that all four legs of each sofa sit on it, I think that will look cosier! I like all of the neutrals ideas, plenty of wool, wood, sheepskin and plants will make it feel much more homely - lots of natural textures!

MummyNessi · 06/12/2018 18:35

Bettyboo thank you for the positive fireplace picture! Maybe there is still hope for it! :D

I think I have just got so many things wrong in this room trying to get out of my normal style Its all over the place!

I will change the rug for a more neutral light colour. Change the coffe table.

The curtains where out of my comfort zone as I have only had white curtains in bedrooms before and had nothing in the rest of the house ( although our last house had a much more modern minimalist style.
I felt like this kind of style needed curtains but I'm not a big fan of patterns and busy styles and as the walls are all white I went with gray but it was maybe a mistake...

On the opposite wall there are 2 large doorway and a wall in the middle with the tv and att the moment a white ikea Kalix I think that needs to go.

What kind of coffee table and curtains should I get?

I don't mind your fireplace OPGrin
Depends how messy/expensive it would be to change it?

Love Betty's photos Smile
The fireplace pics would be a great start.

I have teal walls with oak floors and various shades of brown furniture. It works Wink
Prior to that I had a variety of white Ikea furniture (Kallax, Hemnes etc). If I had my time again I'd have gone with a darker floor but this one isn't that old. I could sand and stain it as it's solid oak but I have other priorities in the house right now!

I've tried to do away with too many matchy-matchy colour accents around the room although i have heavy white venetian blinds which helps with the curtain colour conundrum.

I don't know if it's the pics but your curtains and rug don't scream teal to me, they look more greyish blue Smile

I was in John Lewis recently and they have some lovely colourschemes in their furniture displays. Handily it has the paint colour printed on the wall Grin

GarethSouthgatesWaistcoat · 06/12/2018 19:09

That's tricky if you have your tv and paraphernalia on the opposite wall. Not sure why I hadn't considered that Grin

Kallax is only about 39cm deep. Not sure what the alternative would be - do you have anything that needs to be plugged into the tv? There must be a slimline solution someone has thought of Grin

Ruleof4 · 06/12/2018 19:17

You need to build layers of different textures into the room.

A fur shrug over the sofa, black metal and dark brown accessories similar to the coffee table.

Try and use dark brown wooden frames on the walls if you want to keep the current colour.

The fireplace painted a darker colour would a great accent.

nooddsocksforme · 06/12/2018 19:18

I think a pale rug and either colour or wallpaper on the walls . Personally I think some pattern is needed . Don’t like your fireplace tbh - the wooden mantle is fine - could you get something built to cover the bricks .

FaceLikeAPairOfTits · 06/12/2018 20:39

Have you experimented with putting the sofas at right angles to each other instead and the TV beside the fireplace?

MummyNessi · 07/12/2018 09:05

Could this mirror work?

And possibly these coffee tables:

I like the mirror and the first rug.

I actually like the original coffee table you have. I would introduce a dark wood coffee table, trunk style with black metal handles.

The dark wood is needed to ‘warm’ the room for a country cosy feel. Hope that helps

cherrysfortea · 07/12/2018 11:47

I like the second rug it's exactly what I had in mind.

I would stay away from the beech coloured wood and go for something darker.

cherrysfortea · 07/12/2018 11:49

Also I love the coffee table you have and it will look great contrasted against that type of rug. Have you considered some black and white cushions maybe? I'm not sure if this is to your taste but something like this.

It also shows a rug similar to the one you are considering

The fire place needs to be ripped out. Once that happens, everything else will fall in to place. Before that happens, nothing will look good

MummyNessi · 07/12/2018 12:28

I like that look cherriesfortea!

I'm afraid fireplace will be staying for now at least.
It may not be the old rustic fireplace of my dreams but it's ok and looks a lot better than it did when we moved in.
And we use it a lot. I love having a real open fireplace!

I like those prints as well!!

bellinibobble · 07/12/2018 12:52

I'm biased because I've just done mine the same, but F&B Hague Blue if you don't like reds/oranges but are aiming for cosy.

I have quite a few scandi type things in my living room but with the dark blue and gold accents, the greys of my sofas/whites of my walls it all goes really well together.

Good luck! I love your flooring and sofas!

cherrysfortea · 07/12/2018 13:08

Could you stain the wood on the fireplace to a darker colour? It would look better contrasted against the white fireplace and light walls

FaceLikeAPairOfTits · 07/12/2018 13:28

If you go down the dark staining route or buying another piece of heavy trunk type furniture you may be headed more towards country style, but that won't work with the white bricks of the fireplace and again, I think you need an older home to pull that look off. cherries photo is great.

picklemebaubles · 07/12/2018 13:32

I love the rug you have, and the coffee table. I wouldn't bother repainting yet, I think you need more texture first. So a runner on the coffee table and some cushions/throws in a pattern textured fabric with teal in.

The curtains need more colour- either replace them or edge them with the same fabric you use for the runner.

Get rid of the red Christmas stuff on the mantle piece. Replace with neutral and natural things, greenery, silver, wicker etc.

Put a tall plant in the corner.

Look out for better light fittings.
