What looks best? What is more functional?

As in a computer console? Can't think of anything worse.

Titsywoo · 04/12/2018 13:55

A console table is a thin table that goes against the wall in a hallway. What do you think will get used more OP?

PickAChew · 04/12/2018 13:55

Nothing like that, baby. A console is like a slim sideboard or shelving unit.

Another, what would be more useful to you? Something to sit on or something to put things on?

Titsywoo · 04/12/2018 13:55

I prefer a table though

another20 · 04/12/2018 14:06

Console table would allow me to put a nice lamp / plant / flowers on it - place for keys, post (but might then just attract clutter). Think it the more “formal” approach?

Bench I much prefer the look of - more cosy - but not actually sure would sit down to take off shoes/boots?

It depends on the width of the hallway and general theme of the house.

If narrow, go for console. It's really useful (we have one) for keys, post, etc. If a bit wider, get bench.

If wider, and if your house is a bit more casual or has a cottage look, go for bench. You can get ones with shoe storage, or a nice monks bench. I quite like this one www.cotswoldco.com/hallway-furniture/shoe-storage-bench/bourton-painted-hallway-bench/

Hall is wide enough for a bench - about 2m floor space and then opposite area floor to ceiling built in cupboards for coats and boots. House is modern although I want it to be warm and cosy.

Oh then I'd go for bench! They give a lovely cottage feel. Do you have a photo so we can better advise?

flissfloss65 · 04/12/2018 14:55

I have a console table and find it really useful. Like having the lamp on in the evening asa cosy welcome, somewhere to put keys, few photos in frames. I always use the stairs to sit and put boots on.

It’s being built so no photos yet. We are single storey so no stairs to perch on. It’s the lamp now that’s bothering me .......

Have a look on Instagram - it's where I go for decor ideas. You can then see how others have styled hallways with console vs. bench. Happy shopping!

We have a console table with a lamp etc. I love it

babysharkah · 04/12/2018 19:31

Every days a school day! I now like the idea of a console table - would look nice in my hall.

Lisbon · 05/12/2018 12:05

You can always use wall lamps, if you really want to have a bench

ExplodedPeach · 05/12/2018 13:12

I would love a bench. Our hallway is tiny and it drives me mad having nowhere to sit to put shoes on!

I can't really imagine using a lamp in a hallway - it's not an area I would ever need to be softly lit? I either want it to be brightly lit or not at all, so I would rather a mains light. Also easier to flick on and off when you are juggling bags etc.

I would go for the bench and then get a small side table or shelf elsewhere that you could put a nice plant on.

BriocheBriocheBrioche · 05/12/2018 13:17

Could you find a vintagey téléphone table?
That way you get a bench and somewhere for your lamp?

Ohh a warm oranagy lamp shade is lovely and welcoming in a hallway. The old telephone bench is a good idea - but table bit might be a bit low for standard lamp with shade - a sort of pebble / globe might work though? Also thought maybe a console with a square pouffe thing under that could be tacked under and pulled out?

We have a console table with a drawer and a shelf underneath, on the shelf are two baskets which hold hats gloves etc. It has a lamp, which we use when we have evening guests as it gives a nice glow.

People sit on the stairs to take off their shoes, and I expect would still do so if we had a bench...

KiteMarked · 06/12/2018 10:15

Ah I see this idea has already been discussed. :)
