We moved house recently and have quite a large living room. We've got an L shape sofa & a 3 seater but we don't really know what to do with the rest of the space! Any ideas?

FYI the door on the left goes to the garden. Bottom right door is not used. Top right is the door into the room from the hallway. The purple line is the TV.

Thank you!

So it's really the space behind the sofas, coloured grey that we need help with 😀

How big is the room? Is there a reason everything is cramped up to one end? Is it huge?

If so, then I guess you could put some other chairs, music system, coffee table down the other end, seperate it into a different area.

Yes it's quite a large room. The furniture we have isn't cramped (although I can see why it would appear that way). There is ample space around the sofas & it would look odd to have them any further back.

We were thinking about a piano. Would it be odd to have seating behind the sofas? I've thought about that but DH isn't keen.

Play room type space for kids? Rugs/matts big chests for toys.....punchbag the usual :)

That way there's a grown up space and a kids space that can evolve as they get older.

How big is the room?

NC4Now · 28/11/2018 08:35

Do you have a separate dining room? Otherwise, table and chairs.
Or if anyone plays piano, that’s the place for it.

firsttimemumma123 · 28/11/2018 08:36

Do you have a separate dining room also? Not table in kitchen kind of thing, like a special occasion dining/parties/christmas room etc

Bookshelves along the whole of the back wall with a cool armchair or chaise Longue and side table with a reading lamp.

Cheeseandapple · 28/11/2018 08:54

We've got a separate dining room.

Room is about 4x6m.

Thanks for all the ideas!

That's actually marginally smaller than my main sitting room, we have tv at one end, but about six foot in, (on the wall so folds back flat against it and is very large) sofas at other end in L shape and a huge coffee table.and sideboard. The space is fully utilised.

I can see what you're trying to do though. Yes a piano would work, but I don't think the room is so big it's necessary.

Bluntness100 · 28/11/2018 10:27

Actually scrub that, I misread, it's a lot smaller than mine, which is about 18 foot by 25 foot. So again I'm not sure it's necessary, it's not a very big room.

Study/library? Books can make a room look nice and cosy. Then maybe a table in the middle of the space for the 'reading' area?

Are you imagining an upright or a grand piano?

I have a similar sized room, but with a different layout of chimney and doors. I have the L shaped sofa near the tv and the 3 seater and armchair at the other side of the room. We hang out on the L, but when we have visitors we can use the whole room or sit away from the tv to chat.
