Satin or gloss for woodwork?

I need to go over all the woodwork in the living room as it's developed a horrible cream tinge. The original woodwork was cream but I used an undercoat and two coats of white satinwood (I can't remember the brand unfortunately). Not sure where I went wrong?

I'm on the brink of hiring a decorator but he's suggested white gloss has better longevity in terms of maintaining its whiteness. I didn't really envisage gloss, it sounds a bit dated?

Can anyone suggest a gloss/eggshell/satinwood that isn't going to break the bank and retains a crisp whiteness?

Water based satinwood or eggshell will maintain whiteness far longer than gloss or oil based satinwood. It's because they can't use the same harsh chemicals they used to in oil based, to maintain whiteness (EU banned them).

Thank you! That's what confused me, I used Wilko or Dulux satinwood (can't remember which, they both have good reviews though) and it's still yellowed!

Can anyone recommend a brand they've had success with (pref not F&B)?

You could try Johnstones or Mylands paint OP. They're both reputable brands used by professionals. I prefer eggshell or satin over gloss as they cover a multitude of sins.

Satin for sure this yellowing paint thing has been all over the media.

Don’t use oil based paints, they yellow very quickly. Water based paint that you wash brushes with soapy water keep white for much longer. Dulux Satinwood Quick dry has a good finish. I’ve recently painted 7 doors using a small foam roller, the finish is superb.

Yy Mylands eggshell, it’s lovely too work with & very hardwearing.

Thanks both! I definitely used a water based satin (had heard all about the oil-based issues) so no idea why it's yellowed! Perhaps it's the old cream paint coming through/needed another coat.

Wish you run down the gloss underneath before painting?

I have yellowed gloss doors frames and skirting on our landing and stairs. The only room we havnt decorated yet.

It's alot of wood!! 6 doors and frames blusevlots if spindles to do!!!

Someone did it for me but that could be the issue. I think they lightly sanded then used a coat of primer. Then the satinwood.
