Doesn't have to be shiny gloss, just something hard-wearing that won't chip or yellow. Any recommendations please?

Ronseal make a white gloss that is guaranteed to stay white for 10 years.

Pretty much any White water based satinwood will stay white.

The yellowing issue with gloss isn't supposed to be as bad now though - the main problem came when EU implemented new requirements on paint and it meant the chemicals traditionally used to keep it white were no longer allowed. But companies have supposedly got better formulations to keep it white even with EU rules now.

My decorator said it's oils based paints that don't stay white, water based will be fine

Not sure why but since they stopped putting lead in paint, no gloss stays white. We use a water based satin finish paint.

Switch to satinwood, such as Dulux trade satinwood. It's true that it's oil based which are the problem. Even though they are hard wearing.
