F&B paint - wall prep...

For those of you that have used F&B paint, particularly the darker shades like stiffkey blue, did you use their primer/undercoat or did you paint straight onto a plain white wall? I've stripped wallpaper off, sugar soaped the wall & it's all clean apart from some odd scratches so we're thinking of just painting it with a white (johnstones) emulsion first to get a nice smooth clean surface before painting it with stiffkey blue. The patch test came out ok on the wall, but that's obviously just a small area. Just wondering if you have to use the F&B primer with their paints?

I did my bedroom in Brinjal (one of the darkest F+B shades). Painted over the existing paint with white emulsion and then the F+B on top. Didn't use a primer. It looks perfect so don't see how a primer could've possibly made it any better tbh!

We have always used non f&b paints as under coats although we have only used pastels

I don't bother. But I might if the wall is scratched, because F and B is expensive. I'd probably use a non F and B undercoat.
