Best child/pet friendly and comfortable hallway flooring?

We have carpet down in our hallway at the moment. It's a vintage wool mix, and it desperately needs replacing.

The current carpet is dirty - unfortunately our cats often dismember creatures on it in the middle of the night, and we often put shoes on in the kitchen and walk through the hallway, so it also has outdoor muck ingrained in it.

My brain screams that getting carpet again, even if bleach cleanable, is not a good idea given how much abuse the area gets, and that we should be thinking of something different?

I do like the softness/ comfort/ warmth of carpet under foot though and don't want something that is going to be cold and very hard to walk on when first thing on a winters morning etc.

Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated please!

Thank you!

We have laminate flooring on the whole downstairs of our house. Personally I love it, we have a baby and it's great for cleaning and isn't actually overly cold in the winter, if you were to have tiles this would be considerably colder. We have a big rug in our living room too so there is slight coziness but I do know what you mean about comfort etc.. you could always have a big shaggy rug or runner in hallways etc to add to the comfort?

Have you thought about cork? We just put it down in our kitchen diner and love it! It is like an engineered timber board with cork on mdf and they click together, not like the orangey tiles of old. Lots of colour options too.

Thanks everyone. Lots of ideas there! I think I'm coming round to the idea properly now. I don't want to renovate and then have to change our lifestyle to maintain a new hallway carpet!

Wineymummy what brand is your cork flooring please? I'm very interested in that!

I've realised that we could only ever have something loose lay/ click style due to house issues so that's really interesting.

Thank you!
