What stairway carpet and paint

Bought some lovely pastel picture frames and marquee lights yesterday for the hallway. Originally we thought of a light sage paint and dark grey with specks of white carpet up the stairs. I'm not sure how the carpet would look, but we really don't want a light carpet because of dirt. Would he dark carpet look ridiculously harsh against the light walls? Or should we go for light grey walls?

We've got dark grey with white flecks stair carpet and plain white walls. It looks lovely, well we think so anyway.

Our walls are white at the moment, so we fancied a change. White makes more sense though, as I'm not sure the grey would go with a pale green.
