Painting a sandstone fire surround

Hi was wondering if anyone could advise asto the best way to paint a sandstone fire surround? Have just moved into a new house and the colour doesn’t suit our new scheme. I am worried that painting will be tricky due to the stone being a bit porous. Thanks in advance!!!

Surely it will blend with anything? It doesn't have to match. What is your colour scheme?

Colour scheme is pretty neutral walls/ duck egg sofas. I suppose it’s more that I just don’t like the colour of the surround ( kind of mushroom ) and was hoping for a cheap and cheerful way to smarten it up without having to replace it.

Could you box it in cheaply and paint that? You won't be able to remove the paint once it is done and realistically it will devalue the fireplace
