Safer alternative to stones on fire

I'm moving into a house which has ceramic stones in the fire place. I have a 2 year old and worried she would put them in her mouth and possible choking risk. The fire would look too plain without them. Any ideas for a safer alternative?

Large pillar candles of various sizes grouped together.

Or something like this? Obviously not lit unless your child is in bed. Lots of ideas on Pinterest.

I bought these for a daughter's bedroom fireplace (uni house share). They were never lit but looked attractive.

Put a fireguard up. If you light the fire in winter you'll need one anyway.
