Carpet...

So, in all my 38 years on this planet, I have never needed to be adult enough to replace a carpet .

But our new house has Greige in the living room which I hate and have been wilfully ignoring spills / scuffs etc on it. Good news is that it's now so minging we can justify replacing it hurrah.

BUT. I have no idea what I'm doing!

And presumably there are options that are neutral but warmish tones that won't show every tiny mark and spill????

How do I know what to look for / what's important in a carpet?

Or is it just a case of popping into carpetright and choosing a patterned (?) one I like the look of?

Thrilling subject for a Monday I know... anyone care to give me a glimpse into the world of carpet?

A carpet shop should be able to send someone round to
measure up properly for
you. Don't skimp on underlay- get the best you can afford. You should also be able to take some samples
home with you to see what the carpet will look like in your house.

Great tip about underlay thanks I would have done exactly the opposite!

I think you will do better if you get local independent carpet fitters to come round to measure

Or at least go to visit their shops and ask for help then get them round

Carpet right and other shops like them don't tend to have people working there who actually care about carpets iyswim

The independent ones will have staff who can actually explain different carpets for different purposes/areas/rooms

If you want a non marking one get one with a bit of pattern in threads, like if you want a beige carpet get one with different flecks of colour in the threads so over all colour is beige but if you look closely then you see flecks of green/blue/pink or whatever

You could borrow different samples from independent shop so you can try seeing them in different lights within the room with daylight and lamps

My main advice is to ask the experts not huge shops

If you don't know where experts are - ask on local FB group for your town

YY to not scrimping on underlay. I got my cloud 9 off the internet, far cheaper and better quality than what carpet right quoted me.

In fact I wouldn’t use carpet right again and would try a local independent place.

Friend's cleaner said to get a carpet with a fleck in it.

Buy everything online and use an independent fitter. Saves a fortune.

Agree about the fleck or "heather". It definitely looks cleaner for longer.

80/20 wool is usually the best option if you can afford it. Consider whether you have carpet moths where you live.

PU foam underlay seems to be the way to go. I've got 11mm everywhere.
