Just Decorated - Ideas for Colour of Carpet

We have just had our hall, stairs, landing and dining room decorated. For the first time ever we have used wallpaper on one of the walls and the rest of the walls are colour matched F&B Elephant's Breath - we have run this through the dining room as well. We had intended to have a grey carpet but now I think it will be too much. Just wondered if anyone had any ideas? I have attached photos but the paint has come out much darker on the photos than it really is.

Can't help with the carpet colour (cos I am rubbish at that and I'd just go for grey!) but I love that paper.
Where's it from?

Icequeen01 · 05/07/2018 21:32

Thank you MrsBatkins. It's from John Lewis - it's a Sanderson wallpaper. I loved it as soon as I saw it but was slightly worried about the fact that it has birds on it for some reason. Luckily most people don't seem to notice them at first so I don't think they are too in your face. We are really pleased with it.

Maybe match the carpet to the gold in the wallpaper - not necessarily solid gold, maybe something with a gold fleck effect if you prefer. This would tone nicely with the wooden furniture and brass door handles too. It's looking lovely so far.

looks lovely . colour wise i would say a cream carpet but cant imagine that being a practical colour for stairs and landing but other than cream i would agree with what highwoodwitch said .

Icequeen01 · 06/07/2018 23:02

Thanks so much both. DH mentioned a goldish carpet but I have a real aversion to gold. I might have a look at a toned down or flecked gold carpet. As for a cream carpet, we do have a cream carpet in the lounge and we haven't had too much trouble with it showing the dirt but we do take our shoes off at the front door. We are going to look at carpets on Sunday so thank you for your suggestions.

That looks stunning ❤️

We are getting an Invictus lavender grey for a similar coloured stairs n hallway, they have a range of other colours that are more a warm grey. We have the carpet in the front room for a couple of years and it wears really well too. Carpet right among others sell it

MissCherryCakeyBun · 07/07/2018 16:25

I would suggest taking a piece of the paper and a paint sample to the carpet shop. We have done this then took photos so we could look again and see which we liked as we want the same carpet to do several room that are different colours.

If you go to John Lewis you can get loads of little carpet samples, they are in the drawers below the carpet samples on display, I got quite a few and put them on the floor in different lights in the room to choose my carpet to see how different colours might look

Icequeen01 · 07/07/2018 17:38

Thanks so much everyone.

LightasTheBreeze - Funnily enough we picked up a couple of those little square John Lewis carpet samples when we were first looking at the wallpaper. We have one called squirrel grey which looks nice but I wish we could have a larger sample to give us a better idea.

MissCherryCakeyBun - we were going to CarpetRight tomorrow as they let you take home the bigger samples. I will take a look at the range you have suggested. I'm slightly worried about using CarpetRight and giving them money up front if I'm honest after hearing they are struggling.

If you can get bigger samples, try a darker beigey type colour - biscuit maybe?

CrochetBelle · 07/07/2018 17:56

LOVE the paper by the way, and your whole hall. Didn'tnotice the birds until you said.

MissCherryCakeyBun · 07/07/2018 18:01

OP we have chosen the carpet we want and we are buying it online as it's much much cheaper and then get a good local fitter in....doing this will save us I've £800

LightAsTheBreeze · 07/07/2018 18:25

Yes as MissCherryCakeyBun says get some samples then seek out the carpet online and see where else does it, we did that with our kitchen floor. I must say the business with Carpetright put me off using them and we ended up with a John Lewis special buy carpet in the sale

The samples are very small, I just used them as a guide as to what we wanted, I think I ended up with about 20

InTheRoseGarden · 10/07/2018 12:21

I think a pale beige heather would look beautiful with those walls and the oak. I know because I've just done something very similar in my front room! It has come out really well. Ours is Cormar Home Counties Millstone.

Icequeen01 · 10/07/2018 22:08

@InTheRoseGarden Thanks for the suggestion. Funnily enough we have found a carpet which seems to go really well. It is a gorgeous beige/grey. Since we decorated we noticed that the grey walls have quite a beige tone to them and the carpet we have found matches the walls and the birds on the paper. They are coming out to measure tomorrow and we want to get it laid asap as we are all drawing blood on the exposed gripper rods! They are brutal!😀
