Vaneered wood furniture

Hoping someone can help.
I have a chest of drawers that are vaneered. They are in good condition just ugly. I want to attempt to paint them white but am unsure how. Some sites on google suggest you need to prime it first, some say sand it first.

Any ideas?

If you want a rustic finish you can use chalk paint with no sanding or priming. If you wax or varnish over the paint it makes it more durable. I've never used it and the look of it doesn't appeal to me.

For a cleaner finish, I'd sand very lightly (you don't want to sand the veneer away) and prime then topcoat with two coats of satinwood paint or a paint specifically for furniture like Rustoleum satin finish furniture paint. I've used both, although on solid wood and MDF rather than veneered furniture.
