Is this a reasonable price for bespoke shelving?

Just got a quote for a hand made shelving unit / cupboard to fit into an alcove in our living room. It’s quite large and floor to ceiling. It they have said £960 plus decoration. It would be made of MDF.

It seems expensive but maybe I’m used to Ikea prices!?

I had large cupboard in kitchen, £300

I paid about a grand for a floor to ceiling alcove shelf with small bench unit and two lights in West London about two years ago so I'd say it's about right :(

You are paying for the carpenters time and expertise more than the Mdf. If it’s for your living room and you want it made to your design you obviously want something really nice. I should imagine the price is about right. Hope it all goes well and you get what you want.

Have you considered Jali?

Our alcove is 188cm wide & we were quoted just over that for bespoke mdf shelves with oak veneer. Height probably 2m but I can't remember

Thanks all! Our alcove is 1.4m wide and 2.3m high and it will fill the space. Have had a look at Jali and it’s about £800 but obviously you have to install it yourself.

Sounds like maybe it isn’t so crazy expensive...

We got a shelf from La Redoute that either expands to fit an alcove or goes round a corner (we use it that way), after getting a similar quote.

I paid around that for 2 units, guess a lot depends on where you are in the country.
