Ikea suggestions

I’m going to ikea on Friday and trying to come up with some ideas of how to manage our stuff and clutter. I have 3 dc 7, 5, 2, and 2 large dogs, and we live in a very pretty but very small rented cottage while we build our house nearby.

I was wondering if anyone has put a small billy bookcase on top of a trofast unit to make a kind of dresser?

I thought that might work well to store toys and craft things in the same space.

Also does anyone have any other Ikea genius ideas for living in a small space? I’m reasonably handy with adapting furniture etc so any hacks for things would be great too

Thanks very much

I’d say kallax are the most useful storage ever! You can adapt to your changing needs too or update quite cheaply with new boxes/baskets/shelves/doors.
If your thinking short term - trofast boxes with lids stack lovely - so you wouldn’t even need the bases to slide them into dependent on what you were storing.

Kallax. We have so many of them. They hold so much stuff. DH really, really doesn't like Ikea furniture, but even he is a convert to the way of the Kallax!

I've got an entire wall of kallax, - 9 of the ones with 4 cubes, stacked 3 by 3.. A poor man's built in bookcase, if you will.

I’ve had a trofast unit for almost 20 years which has stored so many toys! It’s currently in DS’s room and now painted grey. We’ve updated the drawers a couple of times (though old drawers have been recycled and used for under bed storage, shoe boxes or pet beds, even a sledge on one occasion). Definitely worth it for long term storage and ace for lego, knex and all sorts.

Ooh brilliant I’ll have to check out the kallax ones then!

We've got an Ikea bureau with a cupboard on top of it. Really pleased with it, it's very sturdy and looks very smart. It's possible to get bookcases to go with it on one or both sides too.

Look in Pinterest for ikea hacks if you want something which isn’t quite off the shelf

Kallax - open shelving for books, big canvas boxes for toys and craft stuff and we've got some with the double drawer inserts for things like kid hair bobbles that tend to take over the house.

I wouldn't like to calculate how many kallax holes we have in this house but it'll be a lot.

Kallax.

We have a total of 48 kallax holes on our house and I’m about to get another 4 on Friday.

Kallax actually changed my life. Plus they're a nice height for kids to do drawing on. And it's nice to have somewhere they can actually put their stuff away in so that you're not just howling at the moon. Enjoy!

I ended up getting a billy bookcase to go on top of our existing trofast unit, I think it looks ok, I'll try to take a picture to show if anyone is wondering if they could do something similar

Blimey - I’ve just counted up and we have 128 kallax holes! Can’t beat ‘em for the money.
