Freestanding wardrobes - recommendations, please

We are moving to a house without built-in wardrobes and I'd like to put freestanding wardrobes in the kids' rooms (teenage and not far off teenage so looking for adult furniture that will take full sized hangers)

Where are good places to buy? I really want this to be the house where we don't just shove Ikea everywhere, but my budget is more like the Ikea end of the scale! Just seen a couple of wardrobes on an Oak Furnitureland advert but not sure what the quality would be like there?

I want a decent quality 2 or 3 door wardrobe for under £1000 (would like to spend around £600-£700). Any brands you wouldn't touch with a bargepole? Any you think are worth looking out for?

thanks in advance

For that price you can get a solid handcrafted wardrobe from a local carpenters or theres a few online that make them to order

Ikea pax. Got one for teen dd and love all the extras you can get such as pull out trouser hanger, shoe racks. Accessory/sunglasses tray. Thought it would be complicated working it all out but it was fine.

Sorry, see you don’t want to shove Ikea everywhere! Still think they’re great. Grin

I think Ikea pax are the best on the market. I looked for my flat and even places like JL don't do anything with as much flexibility and build quality.

The all wooden freestanding pieces look attractive but are often a lot smaller internally than a big old pax.

Having said that I got some mid century modern cherry wardrobes in the end from a house clearance instead. They are beautiful but I was 1) lucky and 2) don't have the same internal storage options.

I’m glad to see so many votes for good old Pax! My first reaction was Ikea but DH not over keen as we have had so much. Though to be fair it has all been good except for drawers which are hit and miss (love my dining table and sideboard)

We have a great one from Taurus Beds - they make wooden beds and matching furniture. I think it would come in around your budget. Had ours ten years and it still looks good as new.
