How to stop home being boring??

Hi,
We've recently moved into a 1960s house that needs completely updating.
I've always lived in Victorian/Edwardian terraces and don't really know how to start here...
Our old house was mostly neutral as the people we bought from had done it up as a rental but decided to sell instead.
How do I keep the decorating a bit interesting and stylish? We are lucky and have quite a decent budget to use for materials and some new furniture but I'm feeling really overwhelmed by the task. I've been looking at interior design magazines but they never feature houses like ours. Any ideas where to start?!

With a 1960s house I'd definitely look at midcentury or Scandi themes for inspiration. I assume it has wide windows and lower ceilings, so the midcentury aesthetic would work particularly well, if that's the case.

Colour. People avoid it but colour+texture looks expensive. Velvet sofas, a plush rug, chintzy

Oh! We have been looking at the mid century styles - you’re spot on with the wide windows and low ceilings.

And DH wants a chalk wall in the downstairs loo

lemonys I would definitely like to be a bit braver with colour in this house but I’m not sure how you avoid the smarties tube look...

Pick a colour and run with it as the main colour, but not all over. So a pea green sofa in an off white room, with the same colour dotted around, for example.

Berry-toned colours are good, rather than primaries.

I love the idea of a raspberry coloured kitchen.

That's lovely loosey - I've seen lots of lovely navy kitchens around but it's so popular I'm worried it will date quickly.

With the colours, I'm not sure whether I'd need to pick a colour to pull through all the rooms rather than pick a different colour for each room??

I know I can make the house look 'nice', I'm just struggling to go the next step from that really I think!
