Blackout curtains (grownup) - recommendations please!

I need to get blackout curtains for our bedroom. The flimsy see-through cotton curtains left by the previous incumbents are a nightmare for letting in the early morning sunshine and waking me up.

I already have blackout-blinds up behind them, but need a double layer as plenty of light still gets in.

Has anyone got a personal recommendation for really effective blackout curtains? I fear spending a lot and then finding put they are still vaguely transparent. Ideally i’d like taupe/cappucino/grey colours, but if i have to have actually black to achieve proper darkness, i’m willing to try.

Should add that one of my two windows is unusually small (45”w x 40”h), which makes it doubly hard to find something suitable, although i’m willing to give hemming a try if it was cheap enough.

Anyone got some that they are genuinely pleased with?

I bought black-out fabric from J Lewis, added "detachable" heading tape and hemmed curtain lining. It is a white fabric on one side with a coating on the reverse. It lets in no light; is easy to cut and sew and does not need hemming as it does not fray.

I've just got some Dorma ones from Dunelm, the blackout is amazing and I feel like a new woman with the change it's made to my quality of sleep!

We bought some solar (I think that's what they were called) ones from dunelm! Absolutely fantastic, can't fault them. We have also teamed them with black out blinds which are amazing!

Most of the light will come in through the edges - it's worth finding a way to block it off if you can. Never thought I'd be advocating pelmets mind!
