How do I magic this away? (Pic)

I'm not bad at diy but I'm scratching my head at this. It's in our bedroom and is what's left after taking away a manky gas fire. Chimney is open behind it. I just want to have a smooth wall, ideally, not make a feature of it. My partner suggested refreshing the duct tape (helpful).

Plasterboard level with the rest of the chimney breast wall. Fit a grille over the open slot as you need airflow to avoid getting damp in the chimney.

Chest of drawers in front of it?
