Does anyone have wooden blinds in the bedroom?

I am wondering how good they are at blocking out the light?

I don't need 100% as I find that disorienting but in this bright sunlight, I would like to keep my room dark past 5am if possible!

Also, potentially stupid question, but if they are made of wood, it doesn't matter if they are painted white, right?

Not in the bedroom but I had dark walnut blinds in the kitchen and they blocked 80% of the light, whereas those that were painted cream in the bathroom let in much more light.

Oh that's interesting Checked, thank you for answering. Though i don't much understand how paint colour makes such a difference, i thought that surely wood is opaque no matter what colour you paint it.

My daughter has them in a huge bay in her bedroom and I was doubtful when I first saw them but they really do block the light - hers are a sort of cream.

Platypus, that's good to hear

Yes, white ones. We're blinded every morning. We're replacing them before the summer!

37KAT · 21/04/2018 22:02

We have wooden blinds and I'm afraid that they do let in light.
We have however resolved this issue by having a blackout roller blind behind them.

I have wooden ones in the bedroom and they do let in light unfortunately. I've had to put curtains up as well.

They also are dust traps & a pain to keep clean.

Checkedwoolblanket · 21/04/2018 22:08

Yes to dust traps, I said I would never have them again!

But, I have recently moved to a house with south facing bay windows, each room having 5 windows minimum with a 2.8m drop in the bay.

If I don't want to bake or have my furniture scorched by the sun I seem to have a choice of shutters (where the frame blocks a lot of our lovely view) or wooden blinds and I think I am going to go back to wooden blinds as the roman blinds I have are either open (fading the furniture) or closed.

We have them, I think if you go for wide slats and tapes on them they do a better job.

Anxiouschild · 21/04/2018 22:24

Agreed, they are a nightmare for dust.
We have some walnut-coloured slatted blinds. They keep the light out well provided the slats are closed facing up (so amount of light getting though is minimised and directed up, not onto the bed). Ours are fitted within the window recess which makes a big difference.

expatmigrant · 21/04/2018 22:30

I did the same as 37KAT. Had white wooden blinds with blackout roller blinds behind them.

MrsHouseBrownie · 21/04/2018 22:37

We have dark wood blinds, they block out about 50% of the light.
I can find clothes in the wardrobe without opening them but they do block enough light so you aren't wake at 5am.

StarbucksSmarterSister · 21/04/2018 22:38

I have cream wooden Venetians. There is a streetlamp outside but that goes off at midnight. I'm usually asleep before that.

There is more light than when I had a Roman blind but it's not an issue. I think you get used to it.

IStillMissBlockbuster · 22/04/2018 07:46

Hmm mixed replies but tipping towards not being massively effective at blocking out light. Thanks

We have walnut-coloured wooden blinds in one of the bedrooms and ended up doing the same thing as 37KAT to block out more light.

NickyNackyNoodleNoo · 22/04/2018 08:31

We did in our bedroom and they were crap! However I angled the damn things a shaft of light always managed to escape to laser into my eyeballs. They also were horrendous dust gatherers.

I ripped them down in a fit of rage one day and replaced them with blackout roller blinds and blackout curtains, I was determined there was to be no more eyeball lasering going on Wink
